Prepare for the worst – now

By Fred Donovan Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Enterprises can no long postpone or ignore business continuity/disaster recovery planning for their networks and data. Whether it's an attack by a hacker that brings down a corporate network or a natural disaster that destroys critical data and equipment, companies need to be ready to bounce back as quickly as possible.

When considering IT budgets, companies often postpone investments designed to fulfill future "hypothetical" needs, preferring instead to invest in more immediate concerns, such as deploying additional servers. But that can be a costly mistake if and when an attacker takes down the network for hours or days or a natural disaster destroys vital customer data.

According to a recent survey cited by Forrester analyst Rachel Dines in her blog, 82 percent of business continuity decision-makers believe their organization's risk level is increasing. The top risks stem from an increasing reliance on technology, business complexity, frequency and intensity of natural disasters and reliance on third parties...Continued

Today's Top News

1. Comcast generates $2.3 billion in annual small business revenues

By Fred Donovan Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Comcast's (NASDAQ: CMCSA) small business communications services segment generates $2.3 billion in annual revenue, which is growing 30 percent to 40 percent top line, the firm's chief financial officer, Michael Angelakis, told listeners at the Goldman Sachs 21st Annual Communacopia Conference this week.

"That is a terrific business with great momentum… We think that the business has a lot of legs left," Angelakis observed. He estimated that the overall market for small business communications services is between $10 billion and $15 billion.

In the mid-size business communications services market, Comcast is just starting to make in-roads. Angelakis estimated that the overall size of that market is also between $10 billion and $15 billion.

"We look at business services, and we think there is a $20 billion to $30 billion addressable market," he told the conference.

Angelakis said the company's small- and mid-sized business strategy is to put boots on the ground.

"We have people going into small office parks where there are lots of doctors, dentists and lawyers who have not seen sales representatives from competing services. We can go in there and make a sale for TV service in a waiting room and multiple telephone lines; typically they have DSL, and we can provide a 10 megabit service. We can go into a larger enterprise and deploy metro Ethernet for 10 gigs," he said.

Frost & Sullivan recently recognized Comcast for its competitive Ethernet services strategy, which has enabled the company to increase its market position.

"Comcast has used competitive intelligence to monitor and analyze the market environment closely, and continues to improve its already extensive portfolio of Ethernet services to edge out competitors. The company has the most extensive core network assets among the MSOs [multiple system operators] and an extremely dense metro fiber infrastructure," said Frost & Sullivan Senior Industry Analyst Charles Carr.

In addition, Carr said Comcast provides "high-touch customer support resources," which includes a local staff presence.

Consulting firm Accenture predicts "robust growth and healthy demand" in the $120 billion small- and mid-sized business communications market. Comcast has its hands full in terms of competitors: There are dozens of firms playing in the space, including AT&T (NYSE: T), CenturyLink (NYSE: CTL), Covad, Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S), Verizon (NYSE: VZ) and Vonage (NYSE: VG).

So while the competition is fierce in the small business communications services market, there is plenty of growth potential. Providers with competitive product offerings and the right strategy should be able to post high growth numbers in that segment.

2. China's ZTE eyes quadrupling of enterprise communications revenues

By Fred Donovan Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Undeterred by its recent pounding in Congress, China's ZTE is pushing ahead with plans to expand its enterprise communications equipment and services business, which it predicts will quadruple in revenue over the next three years.

During recent hearings before the House Intelligence Committee, officials from ZTE and Huawei took heat from lawmakers over allegations that the firms put backdoors in their telecom equipment, enabling the Chinese government to carry out industrial espionage. The companies vehemently deny the charges.

Some in Congress are threatening to block the Chinese telecom companies from the US market. Such a move would have a major impact on ZTE's plans, since the US market would be key to any expansion.

In the Chinese enterprise communications equipment market, ZTE faces competition from Huawei, as well as Western firms Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU), Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO), Ericsson, Nortel and Siemens (NYSE: SI).

ZTE is confident it can take advantage of its market position in the government, large enterprise and heavy industry markets. ZTE Vice President Xu Ming said its enterprise business will grow 70 percent this year compared to last year, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.

ZTE currently has 25 percent of its research and development engineers working on its enterprise communications offering, a number the company would like to expand to 30 percent by the end of 2015

As part of its expansion plans, Ming said, the company will focus on growing niche markets, such as the railroad communications sectors. ZTE currently holds more than half of the Chinese market and hopes to expand into the neighboring markets of Russia and Central Asia.

Huawei has enterprise expansion plans of its own. It only recently set up its enterprise business division, but already reported sales of $1.6 billion, mostly in the government and small and mid-sized business segments, according to Forrester research.

The core product areas for Huawei's enterprise push are networking solutions, security offerings, unified communications and cloud data centers. The company offers enterprise networking products such as routing and switching, servers, storage, security, virtualization and professional services.

According to a recent Gartner report, China IT spending is predicted to exceed $311 billion in 2012, making it the largest IT market among emerging economies. This market presents huge opportunities for Chinese and Western enterprise communications firms alike.

3. Videoconferencing and telepresence market takes revenue hit, finds firm

By Fred Donovan Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Revenues generated by the enterprise videoconferencing and telepresence market dropped to $644 million in the second quarter of 2012, a 6 percent decline, according to a new report by market research firm Infonetics Research.

Infonetics Directing Analyst for Enterprise Networks and Video Matthias Machowinski attributed the revenue decline to economic troubles in Europe, shrinking public sector spending and a shift toward lower-priced video conferencing products.

Market leader Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO) took the biggest hit, with revenues declining 17 percent sequentially and market share shrinking by 5 points. Other vendors tracked by Infonetics include Avaya's Radvision, Huawei, Logitech's LifeSize and Polycom (NASDAQ: PLCM).

Unit shipments of telepresence and desktop systems were down by more than 45 percent year over year.

One bright spot in the market was PBX-based systems, which posted double digit growth for the quarter, fueled by demand for videophones.

Machowinski expects the current revenue slowdown to be temporary because overall shipments of hardware endpoints demonstrated double digit growth year over year, which suggests continued "strong demand for videoconferencing capabilities."

The Infonetics analyst's prediction of continued strong demand for videoconferencing is supported by recent surveys about investment plans for videoconferencing.

survey of chief financial officers by consulting firm Deloitte found that investment in videoconferencing capabilities leads the list of technology investment plans. A full 56 percent of respondents said they plan to invest in videoconferencing, followed by data center efficiency equipment (52 percent) and electric vehicles (35 percent).

A Forrester survey found that a majority of firms plan to adopt desktop videoconferencing. The survey of more than 1,000 firms discovered that companies want to improve the quality of their virtual meetings through videoconferencing.

"Mobile executives want video for better work-life balance, managers want it to see that their direct reports aren't distracted, and multicultural organizations want it to foster the trust and improved communication that comes with being able to read the body language of remote team members," the Forrester report explained.

4. Business process services dominate cloud services market, firm finds

By Fred Donovan Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Business process services will make up more than 75 percent of the $109 billion public cloud services market this year, according to research firm Gartner.

Spending on infrastructure as a service (IaaS), which is the fastest growing segment of the public cloud services market, is expected to grow 45.4 percent in 2012. This compares with an overall market growth rate of 19.6 percent, according to Gartner data.

"The cloud services market is clearly a high-growth sector within the overall IT marketplace. The key to taking advantage of this growth will be understanding the nuances of the opportunity within service segments and geographic regions, and then prioritizing investments in line with the opportunities," said Ed Anderson, research director at Gartner.

The business process services segment, also known as business process as a service (BPaaS), is forecast to grow to $84.2 billion in spending this year, up from $72 billion in 2011.

Last year, cloud advertising, which makes up the bulk of BPaaS spending, totaled about 47 percent of the total public cloud services market. Gartner expects cloud advertising to make up about the same percentage of public cloud services spending through 2016.

Software as a service (SaaS) is the next largest segment, and Gartner predicts spending on that segment will grow to $14.4 billion in 2012. IaaS is forecast to grow from $4.3 billion in 2011 to $6.2 billion this year.

In 2010, the IaaS market was less than 33 percent the size of the SaaS market. By 2016, the research firm expects the IaaS market to grow to almost equal the size of the SaaS market.

Growth in spending on application infrastructure services (also known as platform as a service or PaaS) is forecast to be high, although it is a smaller market relative to the other segments. Gartner expects the PaaS segment, which drives growth in the BPaaS and SaaS segment, to increase to $1.2 billion in 2012.

Gartner is including cloud management and security services as a new forecast segment comprising cloud security services, IT operations management and storage management (including backup and recovery services). Spending on the cloud management and security services segment is forecast to grow to $3.3 billion in 2012.

5. Voip-Pal.com to launch new VoIP patents, soft switch by year's end

By Fred Donovan Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Broadband VoIP provider Voip-Pal.com has completed beta testing of five major VoIP patents it acquired from Digifonica International and plans a retail launch of the patents on its new proprietary VoIP soft switch platform before the end of the year, according to a news release in the Herald Online.

The five acquired patents are for routing, billing and rating (RBR), lawful intercept, short code/emergency dialing, mobile gateway and advanced interoperability solutions.

Along with the patent launch, Voip-Pal plans to launch a redesigned website. The company said the integration of the five patents and the new VoIP soft switch is intended to add income stream to the company's licensing program, which targets cellular and cable operators as well as service providers.

Voip-Pal stressed that it will continue to provide VoIP solutions for the casual and business international travelers who rely on smartphones, laptops or tablets to communicate.

Dennis Chang, president of Voip-Pal, said that with the launch of the patents and soft switch, the company will begin a joint venture marketing campaign with airlines and rewards programs to enable users to purchase long-distance minutes from Voip-Pal through their accrued airline points instead of using cash or credit cards.

The new patents, along with Voip-Pal's acquisition last year of mobile VoIP service provider CallArc.com (now called MyPointsPhone.com), should position Voip-Pal as a strong player in the $58 billion VoIP services market.

"Adoption of VoIP services across both the residential and business segments continues to grow, and we expect strong global growth in VoIP service revenue over at least the next five years," commented Diane Myers, directing analyst for VoIP and IMS at Infonetics Research.

Infonetics expects the number of seats for hosted business VoIP and unified communications services to more than double between 2012 and 2016.

Last year, NTT (NYSE: NTT) led the VoIP services market, with close to 7 percent of global subscribers, followed by Comcast (NASDAQ: CMCSA) and France Telecom, according to Infonetics data.

SPOTLIGHT ON... Spotlight: Future of enterprise communications in virtual reality?

The future of enterprise communications could be in augmented and virtual realities, predicts Frost & Sullivan analyst Elka Popova, who developed this scenario working with a team at the 2012 Growth, Innovation and Leadership Congress. According to this futuristic view, all communications and collaboration devices and applications would feature augmented and virtual reality interfaces. Enterprise communications could take place using three-dimensional avatars and contextual information about the participants. "Just imagine a world, where reality is commonly enhanced with virtual context and where we frequently transition from this augmented reality into various virtual realities, thus living double and triple lives," Popova wrote. She advised vendors and application developers to explore the opportunities in this space. Read more
