Karzai aide corruption case dropped

KABUL, Afghanistan (UPI) -- The Afghanistan government has dropped its corruption case against an aide to President Hamid Karzai, the official whose office ran the case said.

Mohammed Zia Salehi was arrested in July by U.S.-supported corruption investigators, creating an international furor because Karzai lobbied publicly for Salehi's release and revelations that the aide was on the CIA payroll.

Customs seizes hajj passports

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- The U.S. government reimbursed a group of Northern Virginia Muslims who missed their flight to Saudi Arabia due to a customs snafu, a spokesman says.

The 17 had saved thousands of dollars for a pilgrimage to Mecca but the UPS package containing their passports failed to arrive in time for their departure because it was seized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.

U.S. citizen released from Peruvian prison

LIMA (UPI) -- A U.S. citizen jailed in Peru for 15 years for aiding leftist rebels was released after a Peruvian court granted her parole last week.

Lori Berenson left Lima's Chorrillos Penitentiary Monday, where she was serving a life sentence handed down in 1995 for collaborating with the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement to overthrow the government, CNN reported Tuesday. On appeal her sentence was reduced to 20 years.

U.S. forces to Western Australia

PERTH, Australia (UPI) -- U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates has told his Australian counterpart that U.S. ships, planes and troops may be stationed in Western Australia.

The plan was outlined in Melbourne in a meeting that included Gates and Australian Defense Minister Stephen Smith, as well as U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her Australian counterpart Kevin Rudd. It was first reported late Tuesday by the West Australian.
