Fisherman reels in gun from Hudson River JERSEY CITY, N.J. (UPI) -- New Jersey authorities say they are checking to see if a barnacle-encrusted gun a fisherman pulled from the Hudson River was used in any crimes. Jersey City police said a 71-year-old man was fishing off a pier facing Lower Manhattan Wednesday when he reeled in a .32-caliber semiautomatic handgun, The Jersey Journal of Jersey City, N.J., reported. The fisherman carried the gun to a nearby hotel, where a doorman told him to drop the weapon, reports said. The man complied and went back to fishing. Police say the gun was partially covered with duct tape and had barnacles on it. They interviewed the fisherman, relying on his son as an interpreter because he speaks only Chinese, reports said. Hudson County First Assistant Prosecutor Guy Gregory said Friday his office and the Jersey City police are investigating. Copyright 2010 by United Press International

Heart surgery doesn't stop wedding BALTIMORE (UPI) -- A wedding canceled when the groom had emergency heart surgery went ahead later as nurses in a Maryland hospital rallied to make it happen, observers said. Air Force Maj. Jonathan Richter, flanked by a portable heart monitor, exchanged vows with Sheba Phillips in the lobby of the Anne Arundel Medical Center's critical care unit in Annapolis, The Baltimore Sun reported. Richter was rushed into surgery early Thursday for a coronary angioplasty after it was discovered that he was headed for a heart attack because of a blocked artery, the newspaper said. But as the veteran Air Force pilot canceled plans for the scheduled wedding at the Annapolis Yacht Club, nurses of the critical care unit were making plans of their own. "It came natural -- we just said, 'bring it here,'" Michelle Donovan, clinical director of critical care services, said. A nurse came up with the idea as word of the canceled wedding spread among the staff, Donovan said. "Whether it's a hamburger or a wedding, we try to meet the patient's needs," she said. "I'm glad they put the thought in our minds and were able to throw it together. The main thing is getting married, and if this is what it takes, it's what it takes." Longtime friends of Richter and Phillips, whom they described as fiercely loyal, said they weren't surprised the two kept their word to say "I do." "It blew us away," said Tiffany Sherman, a friend of the couple for 25 years. "They say for better or worse, and they're getting the worse over now." Copyright 2010 by United Press International

Russia's Putin takes to the race track LENINGRAD, Russia (UPI) -- Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin became a "fast-track" politician as he drove a Formula 1 racing car around a track near Leningrad, officials said. After receiving instructions on how to drive a racing car, Putin drove at 149 miles per hour for several hours on a special track in the Leningrad region, RIA Novosti reported Sunday. Three Formula cars were put on display Saturday and Sunday in St. Petersburg. Last month, Putin signed an agreement with Formula One to bring a Grand Prix race to Russia between 2014 and 2020, the Russian news agency said. Putin's spin around the track was the latest in a series of highly publicized events ostensibly meant to portray him as a man of action. He recently joined the crew of a submersible to dive to the bottom of the world's deepest lake, Lake Baikal. Wedding limo carjacked at Mass. church DORCHESTER, Mass. (UPI) -- Members of a New England wedding party said they didn't want to upset the happy couple by telling them their limousine had been carjacked. Six bridesmaids and the limo driver were forced out of the vehicle Saturday by a hammer-wielding assailant outside a Dorchester, Mass., church while the bride and groom were inside, The Boston Globe reported Sunday. "They all acted as if nothing happened," the Rev. Jack Ahern told the Globe. "They just didn't want to ruin the bride's wedding." No one was hurt in the incident, Ahern said.
