Trouble sleeping? Try a weekend in the wilds.

New research shows that being bombarded with artificial light is leaving all of us permanently jet-lagged. But a reset button is just a camp site away.

Trump's First Operation

A U.S. soldier and Yemeni civilians dead, and intelligence used and gained in doubt

The battle and its aftermath, described to NPR by U.S. national security officials as well as the local witnesses, are the subject of a new investigation by the U.S. Central Command. A Navy SEAL and two-dozen Yemenis were killed, including women and children; later in the week it was reported that video the Pentagon described as intelligence gained in the raid had been publicly available for a decade.

Magnificent Magma

A 'firehose' of lava pours into the Pacific in this new video

On New Year's Day, about 21 acres of rock from the Komokuna lava delta collapsed, exposing a lava tube from the Kilauea volcano. The effect is a bit like a burst pipe in a garage ceiling.

But with more explosions.

The Golden Rule In Action

A small Texas mosque can rebuild as community and Internet rally to its side

Four churches and a synagogue in 70,000-population Victoria have offered to host Muslim services, and the $1.1 million in donations the congregation has received surpassed its $850,000 goal. "The outpouring of love, kind words, hugs, helping hands and the financial contributions are examples of the true American Spirit and Humanity at its best," one member said. Or as an online donor chimed in:

"Here's to hope and kindness."

Turn Off, Tune Out, Go Far

Research shows modern life is making us perpetually jet-lagged. The cure is to get away.

Melatonin makes us feel tired. Levels of the hormone should rise a couple of hours before we sleep and fall right when we wake up. But a recent study showed that many of our internal clocks are just a bit out of sync, with melatonin crashing again a couple hours after we wake. A weekend free of artificial light proves a pretty quick fix.

Camping sans electronics, for instance.

Bills across the country could increase penalties for protesters

After two years of protests that often have shut down highways, state legislatures in several states are trying to make future demonstrators think twice. In Iowa, that could mean five years in prison and a $7,500 fine. Three other states are considering similar bills, while in North Dakota a motorist could accidentally run over and kill any protester obstructing a highway with no penalty.

The ACLU says the bills are un-American.
