In the year before a presidential election, the Conservative Political Action Conference, or CPAC, is usually a testing ground for a slew of potential presidential candidates.
But not this year. Some big names skipped the event entirely, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott and former Vice President Mike Pence. They went instead to the Club for Growth’s donor retreat in Florida.
The Club for Growth has pledged to support a candidate other than former President Donald Trump, and with polling suggesting white-collar Republicans are open to another option, these candidates need big-donor backing.
Some candidates and potential candidates did attend CPAC, like former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, as well as Trump’s former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. But their welcomes were lukewarm, to be charitable. Trump closes out the event with a speech tonight, then over the next several days, Trump and DeSantis will make their first trips this cycle to Iowa, the early nominating state, and Haley will be back there as well.
Santos under investigation: A formal investigation has been launched into whether New York Rep. George Santos engaged in “unlawful activity” during his 2022 campaign, including whether he violated conflict of interest laws and “engaged in sexual misconduct” with someone seeking a job in his office.

Biden won’t veto D.C. crime law bill: The president told Senate Democrats he wouldn’t use his veto power to shoot down a GOP effort to repeal D.C.’s new crime laws.
Murdoch on 2020 election lies: Fox News controlling owner Rupert Murdoch admitted under oath that he could have stopped the network’s hosts from spreading lies about election fraud but chose not to.
