Good morning. It's Monday, Dec. 4, and we're catching up with the best moments from last night's slightly chaotic Kennedy Center Honors. Now let's get to the news. |

| Israel's military is expanding its ground operation in the Gaza Strip. | - The latest: Israeli strikes are hitting densely populated areas in the territory. An estimated 1.8 million people — 80% of Gaza's population — have fled their homes, the U.N. says.
- What next? The U.S. wants Gaza to be governed by the Palestinian Authority, which runs parts of the West Bank, after the war. But the idea is unpopular with Israel and many Palestinians.

(White House/AP) | - Her legacy: She issued the key vote in many cases in her nearly quarter-century as a justice. She tried to avoid what she called "giant steps you'll live to regret."
