Easy Date and Time Entry in Excel

A reader writes:

"How do I format a cell so that I can input 08212007 with no dashes or slashes and have it appear in the spreadsheet cell as 08/21/2007? No matter how I try to format the cell I get different numbers that bear no relationship to the date I want. Maybe I need a formula? Any help would be greatly appreciated."
