| Posted: 03 Nov 2008 06:26 PM CST You may remember the story of Archimedes who created a mirror to point at the advancing enemy Roman boats and setting them aflame with the concentrated power of the Sun’s rays. After watching this video maybe Archimedes did indeed do such a thing! Wooden boats, a hot dog and a steel plate all are powerless against mighty Sol! Mind you the steel plate being melted is not a time lapsed video clip! That thing is melting like butter! Thankfully, all we are doing in our age is using the Sun to power our homes and cities and no one has decided to create solar powered weapons…yet. |

| The White Obama and the Black McCain Posted: 03 Nov 2008 01:24 PM CST
Grey NYC’s Creative director Tor Myhren came up with this brilliant poster to bring into the forefront what a lot of people have been thinking of, but couldn’t bring themselves to say in polite company: the issue of race in the 2008 US Presidential election. Regardless of what you think of the candidates, I’m sure you can marvel at the photoshoppery of turning Obama and McCain into persons of another race: Link - via Miss Cellania At a glance, we only had handful of (and not to mention, mild) political posts - so on the eve of this historic election, let me ask you this: what would you say to someone who’s on the fence on either candidates? Why should I vote for Barack Obama or John McCain? |

| Posted: 03 Nov 2008 10:51 AM CST If the TV show The West Wing was the real world, Josiah Bartlett would be marking the tenth anniversary of his presidential election today. Today’s mental_floss quiz tests how well you remember about his fictitious presidency. Don’t be afraid to try; I scored 40% and I’ve never seen the show. Link |

| The Origins of the Safety Razor Posted: 03 Nov 2008 09:14 AM CST I took a bunch of kids to an antique store over the weekend, and one asked me about a box she found. I explained it was a safety razor. She remarked that it didn’t look too safe. No, I replied, but it was a lot safer than the blades they used before that! This post traces the various patents that led to the relatively modern safety razor, beginning in 1762. Link -via the Presurfer |
