Developer Shed Weekly SEO News for 2009-01-30

January 30, 2009

Well, it's another week, and another issue of the SEO Chat newsletter. We have some interesting statistics for you this week that hint at the impact Google is making outside of search and SEO. It seems a recent survey showed that 40 percent of application developers working on open source projects plan to use cloud providers to deliver their services and of these, the majority, at 28 percent, plan to use Google App Engine to develop those applications. You can get the full story at eWeek. The tentacles just keep reaching, don't they?

There's nothing terribly Cthulhu-like about the articles we published for you this week. Well, okay, actually, I lied about that. Wednesday's review focused on DeepDyve, a search engine that claims to cover the deep web and reach into areas even Google can't index. Speaking of Google, Tuesday's article helped you get a handle on that Goliath of a search engine by explaining several of its algorithms and what you have to do to please them. And we kicked off the week with a look at what it takes to create a memorable domain name today; if you haven't thought about this subject in a couple of years, you might want to stop by for a skim. After all, two years is an eternity in Internet time.

If you haven't yet discovered all of the lovely SEO-related tutorials available on Tutorialized to enhance your knowledge, shame on you! This is a free resource; why not make the most of it? Those of you whose interests range beyond SEO will enjoy the other web- and developer-related topics we cover there as well. Don't forget that you can always create and upload your own tutorial to Tutorialized, thus sharing your wealth of wisdom. Remember, information wants to be free!

Our Thread of the Week focuses on a simple area of SEO that's actually pretty easy to get wrong: anchor text. Fortunately, it's also easy to correct. All you need to do is think a little bit about what Google is really looking for, and how that would actually appear in practice.

Finally, our Spotlight, just for readers of our newsletter, discusses the potential of microblogging social site Twitter as a marketing tool. We all know that it was one of many pieces of technology that Barack Obama used to excellent, perhaps even devastating, effect during his presidential campaign. What can it do for your SEO campaign? Scroll down to the Spotlight to find out.

As always, thanks for reading.

Until next time,

Taking a DeepDyve into the Deep Web
by Terri Wells
2009-01-28

If the latest figures from Internet research companies can be believed, Google serves the needs of most web searchers most of the time. But serious researchers know that the web boasts nooks and crannies that even Google spiders can not reach. DeepDyve thinks it can help solve this problem.

These secret caverns, nicknamed the "deep web," hide their content behind subscription-based firewalls. Mainly of interest to academics and researchers in specialized fields (such as law or medicine), these databases of information are expensive to build and expensive to maintain. Fortunately, their main clientele includes those with the money to pay for access: lawyers, large libraries, medical schools, major universities and the like.

That is not quite so helpful for the individual, independent researcher. There are parts of the deep web that do not require a subscription, but a lone researcher may face other obstacles. Many important scientific papers do not receive a lot of links, regardless of their scholarly citations. This stymies the search engines usual approach to finding documents. So what can you do when you know the information is out there, but you just can not get to it by the usual means?

Google Algorithms
by Ivan Strouchliak
2009-01-27

As SEOs, we spend much of our time trying to figure out how Google indexing algorithms work. This article will take a look at the techniques used by the search engine. We will cover latent semantic indexing, local inter-connectivity, link analysis, and more. We will discuss the implications of these algorithms, and what you should do to give them what they want to see.

Latent semantic indexing is the science of natural language processing. LSI analyzes relationships between words and is designed to distinguish naturally written text from keyword-stuffed documents. Latent semantic indexing considers natural and synonymous relationship between words.

For example, if you are examining an article about an airplane, LSI will look for synonyms: aircraft, plane, aero plane. It will also look for related words, which are NOT synonymous to the word, but are often mentioned when discussing airplanes: ailerons, turbulence, fuel, clouds, sky, roll, pitch, etc.

Creating Your Domain Name
by Terri Wells
2009-01-26

With the Internet now a staple of our society, it seems as if everyone wants a web presence. If you dream of owning your own online business, you need to create a domain name. That is a lot more complicated now than it used to be, but you can still craft a winner if you keep a few points in mind.

I nearly titled this article "It's the Brand, Stupid," because most of the articles I read on domain name selection focused on that point. If you are already selling a particular product or service - or you want to, and that is why you are starting your web site - you should include its name in your domain name. Obviously, if someone else owns the trademark, you can not use it without permission (do not even think of including Coca-Cola in your domain name!). But if you own it, by all means go for it.

Say your name is Sam Goldstein, and you make really gorgeous outdoor fountains. You could try for a number of different domain names, depending on which one was most evocative of your business and most likely to appeal to your customers: goldsteinfountains .com, thatfountainguy .com, fantasyfountains .com, and I could easily go on. Brainstorm and see what works.

For this week's thread we're keeping it simple with a question and answer about anchor text for links. Remember what Google is really looking for, and be sure to stop by the thread to join the conversation.

x-termin8or

Question about link anchor text

Say I wanted to optimize one of my websites for the keyword "window cleaning London." Would it matter if one of my keyword's anchor text was "window cleaning in London"?

Does the "in" make any difference or does Google ignore it?

SEO_AM

Makes almost no difference at all. Ensure that you vary your anchor text so that it would appear natural, e.g. window cleaning in London, London window cleaning, or London's best window cleaning, etc.

x-termin8or

Ok, so right now to confirm this is what I am thinking to do:

When getting links back to my site I make sure the main anchor text in most of the texts is "window cleaning London" and then in various other links have other similar anchor texts so that Google doesn't think the links are unnatural or that anything dodgy is going on.

SEO_AM

You got it!

Can Twitter Help Your Bottom Line?

With members of the SEO Chat forum prepared to examine any new technology for its potential marketing advantages, it was only a matter of time before someone started asking about Twitter. For those who are not in the know, Twitter is a microblogging site. Entries are limited to 140 characters, and often made by people on the go, posting text messages from their cell phones about whatever they happen to be doing. Users can follow other users whose Twitter stream attracts their interest.

Barack Obama took this apparent tool for time-wasting and unleashed its true power. He posted tweets that were followed by many of his supporters, building morale and helping everyone stay in touch and on the same page. So what can Twitter do for someone who's not trying to get elected to the highest office in the land? Specifically, if you're a company that sells products online or looking to build an email data base, is Twitter even relevant?

It might not be, especially if you're not based in North America. One of our SEO Chat forum posters noted that Twitter turns off SMS capability outside of the US, making it much less useful. He went on to note that Twitter is only effective with a fan base. If you do have one, you can do some useful things with it, such as promote a cool event you're holding at a coffee house, or raise your visibility at a conference.

Another poster noted that Twitter is helpful for getting traffic, but not back links, so it won't raise your visibility in the search engines. Respected forum member seogoat observed that Twitter is a medium to help spread great ideas, and that Without the likes of social networking sites like this, the websites, solutions, services and ideas would not spread as fast as they do. If your site is heavily focused on content, then, and especially if you have a blog with a following, you might be able to benefit from using Twitter.

SEO Chat's forum gadfly fathom predictably laid it out plainly: it all depends on whether your products and services are aligned with the needs and desires of the people who use Twitter. Like SEO Chat, Twitter has its own following. But just like SEO Chat doesn't offer great leads (or links) to people in the interment industry like funeral homes, cremation services, or urn sales, Twitter isn't going to help you in marketing unless your products and services appear to the average user of Twitter, he noted. Additionally, as with any social networking site, you need to invest the time to become known to its members and even if this isn't a monetary investment, it is costly in other ways even when it's free, fathom observed. So don't just jump on the Twitter bandwagon; consider what you have to offer, and whether your target audience regularly uses the microblogging site, before you even make your first tweet. Time is one valuable resource you can't afford to waste. Good luck!
