June 6 marks the 65th anniversary of the Allied troops' beach invasion of Normandy. A visit to these beautiful beaches and the American Cemetery at Colleville Saint Laurent is a memorable shore excursion from a Seine River cruise or when your ocean-going ship is docked in Le Havre, Honfleur, or Cherbourg, France.

Normandy Beaches - Tour of the Normandy Beaches of France
Travelers who love history can re-live one of the key sites of World War II in Normandy, France. Allied troops crossed the English Channel and landed in Normandy in June 1944. A river cruise down the Seine from Paris or an ocean cruise porting in Le Havre, Cherbourg, or Honfleur are perfect for visiting the Normandy beaches of France.

Normandy Beaches and American Cemetery - Photo Gallery
The Normandy beaches are quiet in 2009, but were filled with the sounds of war in 1944. I never realized how wide the beaches were or how steep and high the cliffs were that the Allies had to scale to escape the beach. These photos show some of the sights of Normandy, including the pristine cemetery at Colleville Saint Laurent.

Cherbourg - Coast Town of Normandy, France
Cherbourg sits on the tip of the Cotentin Peninsula in the Normandy Region of France. Cruise ship passengers can visit the Normandy beaches, the Saire Valley, Cap de la Hague, or Mont Saint Michel from Cherbourg. They can also use the day to explore this charming French coastal town.
