September means a lot of things to a lot of people, but for many, it's the end of vacation and the time to go back to work. With that in mind, what better time than now to check in with your customers and members to see how you're doing?

Creating an effective survey can generate responses to help you craft your business plan in the weeks and months to come.
You could build a survey that asks customers for their opinion of your products or services. Maybe you're deciding what type of specials to run for the upcoming holidays, or maybe you're already starting to plan your fundraising drive for next year. Whatever the reason, conduct a survey. The options are endless.
No matter what type of survey you choose, it needs to be concise and useful. Here are three secrets for building an effective survey that will serve both your customers and your own needs.

One might think a roller derby league that entertains its fans with girls on roller skates knocking each other silly would settle disputes with elbows and fists. But Milwaukee-based Brewcity Bruisers instead turns to the more congenial method of online surveys to gather feedback from members and the public alike.
The league, which consists of four local and two traveling teams, has been using Online Survey from Constant Contact since September 2007 to ask league members about everything from budget items to scheduling issues. It chose Constant Contact based on the advice of other small businesses in the Milwaukee area after finding that other free survey tools didn't meet the league's needs, says Brewcity Bruisers' public relations chairperson, who goes by the name "Moby Nipps."
Contacts in the league's database are segmented into numerous categories for better survey targeting, including internal member distribution lists for roller girls, referees, and cheerleaders, aka "beerleaders." Nipps says the group sends one survey a month on average (sometimes more) with many containing only a couple questions. "The league needs to vote on many of the decisions that will affect everyone," Nipps says.
With such vital league matters at stake, Moby likes the Constant Contact feature that allows administrators to see who has responded to survey requests and who needs a friendly reminder to vote.
Surveys have resulted in an enthusiastic response ("What would you expect from 80 beautiful, strong-minded women?" Nipps asks), and have helped make valuable business decisions. For example, the group recently surveyed members about the advertising budget for an upcoming event. While the members voted to support full funding of the ad budget, Nipps reports, the committee cut back on the expense line and was still able to pull off a great event, keeping the members of the league happy. Clearly, online surveys are helping to keep the Brewcity Bruisers rolling along.
