MICROSOFT SURPRISES WITH NEW EMBEDDED OS
Microsoft has unveiled two surprises, not only announcing a Windows 7-based embedded operating system (OS) before its desktop cousin ships, but also adding a digit to the product's name. Windows Embedded Standard 2011, previously "Quebec," is downloadable now as a Community Technology Preview (CTP), the company says.

SONY ERICSSON SPINS SECOND HIGH-END WINDOWS PHONE
Sony Ericsson has announced its second Windows phone, the high-end Xperia X2. The device features a 3.2-inch touchscreen with 800 x 480 resolution, a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, an 8.1 megapixel camera, and a widget-based "Xperia panels" user interface, the company says.

Motorola has announced two Windows CE-based devices with integral barcode scanning capabilities. The Symbol MT2000 is a handheld computer that may also be tethered to laptops or POS (point of sale) systems, while the Symbol MK4000 is a self-service kiosk that lets customers check pricing or gift card balances, the company says.

HTC ANNOUNCES FIRST WINDOWS MOBILE 6.5 PHONE
HTC has announced its first Windows Mobile 6.5 phone, featuring a 2.8-inch touchscreen display and a 3.2 megapixel camera. The Touch2 offers a 528MHz processor, 256MB of RAM and 512MB of flash storage, GPS, WiFi, and Bluetooth 2.1, according to the company.

NOKIA UNDERWHELMS WITH NETBOOK SPECS, PRICING
Nokia has released technical details and pricing for the Windows netbook it launched last month. The "Booklet 3G" has 12-hour battery life, a 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z530 processor, 1GB of soldered DDR2 RAM, and a 120GB hard disk drive, but costs more than $800, says Nokia.

WIFI-EQUIPPED PHONE SALES TO DOUBLE YEARLY, ABI SAYS
ABI Research has released a report predicting a doubling of dual-mode phones supporting both WiFi and cellular networks every two years. The research firm predicts that 144 million dual-mode handsets will ship this year, rising to more than 300 million in 2011.

AML (American Microsystems, Ltd.) has announced a kiosk data terminal that runs Windows CE 5.0 and is aimed at retailers. The KDT900 includes a 5.6-inch touchscreen display, PoE (power over Ethernet) capabilities, an optional barcode scanner and MSR (magnetic stripe reader), and several serial ports, the company says.
