No, Chanel isn’t marketing to the ComicCon crowd. This is a work by artist Tetsuya Noguchi in homage to the famous French design house. Pink Tentacle assembled a photogallery of the suit.

End-Cut Log Cabin

Posted: 15 Jan 2010 05:04 PM PST

Architect Piet Hein Eek built this log cabin as a study for musician Hans Liberg in the Dutch town of Hilversum. Rather than build log walls perpendicular to each other, two sides consist of exterior end cuts. You can view an extensive photo gallery (inside and out) at the link.

A Gallery of Photographs of Lava

Posted: 15 Jan 2010 03:40 PM PST

The U.S. Geological Survey has an extensive database of lava-related events in Hawaii.  One hundred of the best images have been assembled on a web page and placed on a DVD.  These were…

…selected from the collections of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory as enduring favorites of the staff, researchers, media, designers, and the public over time. They represent photographs of a variety of geological phenomena and eruptive events, chosen for their content, quality of exposure, and aesthetic appeal. The number was kept to 100 to maintain the high resolution desirable.

In the photo above a pair of “concerned scientists” decide to run from a “…surging 'a'a flow in Royal Gardens. The top of an 'a'a flow rides on the underlying mass and rolls over it like a tractor's tread, advancing to the front of the flow.”

30 Most Anticipated 2010 Movies

Posted: 15 Jan 2010 02:05 PM PST

Film School Rejects runs down the 30 films slated for release this year that audiences are anxiously awaiting.  This year, many projects are coming out that I and my film-loving friends have been jawing about since last January.  The usual suspects are there — Harry Potter, Iron Man 2, Alice in Wonderland.  But there are other titles coming out that, even though they don’t get a lot of press, look fantastic.  For instance, The Adjustment Bureau:

Image: Universal Pictures

The Pitch: Phillip K. Dick's short story about a man in a changing reality is brilliant and includes some very cool imagery that would translate well to film. I have no idea if it's been translated with this adaptation, but George Nolfi (in his first stint as director) is a great writer, and Matt Damon is one of the best working actors today. Pair him with Emily Blunt, toss in Terence Stamp and Anthony Mackie with a heavy dose of science fiction, and I have no idea why you wouldn't get excited.

Catch the whole list at the link.  Did they leave anything off?

Simpsons Fan Attempts to Break World TV-Watching Record

Posted: 15 Jan 2010 10:47 AM PST

Human ambition expresses itself in myriad ways. Some people climb the highest mountains or journey into the unknown. Others build technological marvels or discover the wonders of science. But perhaps the greatest among us sit around and watch TV all week.

Such is the dream of Glyn Stott, a Simpsons fan from Merthyr Tydfil, UK, who hopes to be entered into the Guinness Book of World Records for watching all 451 episodes of The Simpsons, back to back, without resting:

His six-day feat will be overseen by officials to ensure he does not fall asleep.

Mr Stott, from Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales, said: “I’m a huge fan of the show and I’ve seen every episode but watching them continuously for almost a week will be a feat of endurance.

“The judges have to make sure my eyes are firmly fixed on the screen – I have to be seen to be concentrating all the way through.”

The current record for non-stop television watching is four days, set by an American viewer.

Trading Places, Coming to America, or Beverly Hills Cop?

Posted: 15 Jan 2010 10:04 AM PST

Three of Eddie Murphy’s funniest movies came out in the mid-80s. In this Lunchtime Quiz at mental_floss, you are challenged to identify twelve quotes. Did they come from Trading Places, Coming to America, or Beverly Hills Cop? Despite (or maybe because of) the fact that I’ve seen all three movies again fairly recently, I only scored 33%. Link

Creating Hospitals from Thin Air

Posted: 15 Jan 2010 09:14 AM PST

Doctors Without Borders is setting up shop in Haiti to provide medical services to those affected by the earthquake. They will use an inflatable hospital.

It’s exactly what it sounds like: a temporary hospital with inflatable components that can be deployed whenever needed. Doctors Without Borders has been employing them for years, including an impressive inflatable nine-tent, 120-bed center in Pakistan following a 7.6 magnitude earthquake there in 2005. The hospital post-and-beam frames can be made from the same fabric in inflatable lifeboats. Nylon interior and exterior walls leave space for air to create an insulating effect.

River Whale Garden

Posted: 15 Jan 2010 08:03 AM PST

The ‘whale’ is actually a project from Vincent Callebaut Architects called Physalia Physalis or ‘Water Bubble’, and it has a very serious point. One billion people don’t have access to clean drinking water. This vessel is designed to float up and down the rivers of Europe, purifying the water as it goes. It is of course a huge floating garden among other things, with interior gardens dedicated to Earth, Water, Wind and Fire. So in theory it would make the Thames drinkable. It is also apparently completely self-sufficient, being covered in solar panels. In fact, it is meant to produce more energy than it uses. Too bad it is only a concept for now.

Mouse vs. Mouse Trap

Posted: 15 Jan 2010 07:57 AM PST

The cute little mouse in this commercial unfortunately gets caught in a mouse trap, since he can’t resist the tasty piece of cheddar laying there. The good thing is that it’s the kind of cheese that comes with a slogan that says “Seriously Strong”.

Dog Fitted with £10,000 Bionic Leg

Posted: 15 Jan 2010 07:50 AM PST

Coal the bulldog had cancer which led to the amputation of his paw. But his owner shelled out £10,000 for a titanium leg for the disabled dog! The benefit is not only his. Coal is also a research subject for new limb prosthetic techniques that will benefit injured humans.

Vet Noel Fitzpatrick told the Enfield Independent: ‘This is unique in that its the world’s only implant into which skin and bone grow. It is the holy grail of research.

‘If you have an accident and your bone sticks out through your shin, skin will try to grow round it. People have been trying for this for years and years -because with this we get an umbrella of skin attached to the metal.’

Sarcasm Punctuation Mark

Posted: 15 Jan 2010 06:42 AM PST

A US company has created a punctuation mark that it hopes will be used to express sarcasm. It can be downloaded for a small charge and then inserted into documents with a Ctrl key command. The company proposes that the SarcMark can be used to avoid confusion in emails:

Anyone concerned that the irony of their email or text message might not be appreciated by its recipient can use the symbol to close their sentence, thereby avoiding awkward misunderstandings.

The symbol – a dot inside a single spiral line – can be installed onto any PC running Windows 7, XP or Vista, as well as Macs and Blackberry mobile devices.

Calvin & Hobbes Snowmen

The comic strip Calvin & Hobbes often included Calvin’s disturbing snowmen. We’ve previously featured one such scene recreated with real snowmen, but WebUrbanist has a post filled with them.
