Hey, Griff here again from Blues Guitar Unleashed
This email is about a video I shot a while back with one of my students.
It's inspiring every time I see it, and I encourage you to watch it as well.
Having been a guitar teacher now for a long time (over 20 years!) I've had the great opportunity to see some of my students get pretty far with their playing.
And while I've enjoyed touring and seeing so many countries and meeting so many people around the world, I honestly get the most enjoyment from seeing the light bulb go on for my students.
Back in the early 1990's I started my trio, The Griff Hamlin Band, and started playing all across LA and Orange counties in Southern California. We sometimes played as many as 180-200 nights per year.
I've always kept a pretty full roster of students, and during those years I met a lot of guitar players at local clubs and venues who eventually became students and friends of mine.
Well, today I have a unique opportunity in that one of my students agreed to let me get him on video as sort of a "case study" in learning blues guitar. His name is Anthony, and he's been with me for about a year now.
As you know, many of my students have been the inspiration and "test subjects" for much of my material. What makes Anthony unique is that he was actually one of the first students to go through the material that is now Blues Guitar Unleashed straight out of the book.
Anyway, to make a long story short, a couple of weeks back we were at a lesson and I was really impressed with how Anthony was playing. More importantly, I was really impressed with how much his ear had started to really hear what's going on.
It's so hard to teach, and even harder to explain. But one of the great "side benefits" of this method I use is that it really seems to develop your ear as well as your chops.
So I hope you'll enjoy watching the video as much as Anthony and I obviously enjoy his lesson time each week. He tells a great story from his daughter that I got a kick out of.
If you are either new to playing blues, or haven't really yet had a chance to get very far, maybe this will give you that little extra bit of inspiration you've been looking for. I think even experienced players will enjoy this reminder of the journey.
