This past Thursday we hosted a Tweetchat discussion on "How to Increase Traffic to Your Website" with our guest moderator Tinu Abayomi-Paul. Tinu is an expert in web marketing and search engine optimization (SEO) and has had great success in helping people generate leads and traffic from the web to their online properties. She is a widely published small business expert who blogs at freetraffictip.com, a site focused on building traffic systems to increase website profitability.

For those not familiar with Search engine optimization (SEO), it involves making enhancements to your website in order to improve its rankings in search engines like Google® or Yahoo!®. To help small business properly implement an SEO strategy for their business, will address attempted to address these key questions:

Every small business needs to know how to optimize their web site for search engines since it is how consumers looking for specific products and services will find you. Implementing these best practices is also key in understanding where your customers are coming from and how they are finding you on the Internet. Over the course of the hour we learned some new tricks, got some great questions and gave away a few prizes.

The big theme that ran throughout the Tweetchat was Tinu’s Top 10 Tips on Increasing Web Traffic. She listed them as follows:

Tip #1: Know what your objective is, and start with that in mind.

Tip #2 – Understand where you are now. What is "more" traffic – compared to what? What are higher rankings?

Tip #3 – Find the pain of your audience, where they go to relieve it and any unhealed pain they have that your product or service could be the solution to for your prospects.

Tip #4 – Format your game plan around reaching that audience.

Tip #5 – It's hard to do many things well. Pick 5 web traffic areas per team member, &focus on one of them per day or marketing hour.

Tip #6 – Things work for most sites – Article marketing, Blogging, SEO, Advertising, podcasting, video marketing, &PDF marketing.

Tip #7 – Even with free traffic, If you can, test with a small advertising run.

Tip #8 – Pick keywords &targets from the perspective of customer needs, not your company name or products.

Tip #9 – Have a lead gen system. 97- 98.5% of the time, people are not ready to buy when they 1st hear about you.

Tip #10 – New things are great but stick to your fundamentals. Just cuz you’re using social media doesn’t mean stop visiting forums.
