Sports Update For Indiana Saturday July 31, 2010 | Baseball MLB: San Francisco 6, LA Dodgers 5 SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) -- Aubrey Huff had three RBI in support of Tim Lincecum Friday and San Francisco gained ground in the division with a 6-5 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Giants survived a shaky ninth inning to move within 2 1/2 games of National League West-leading San Diego. Lincecum (11-4) did not figure in the decision in either of his last two starts and had to sweat out a shaky ninth inning before picking up Friday's victory. San Francisco took a 6-2 lead into the ninth and wound up using four pitchers to get through the frame. Scott Podsednik, obtained in a trade this week with Kansas City, tripled in a run in the ninth and scored on a wild pitch. Matt Kemp had an RBI single later in the inning and the Dodgers had the tying run on third base before Chris Ray got Casey Blake to ground into a fielder's choice to end the game. Ray was credited with his second save. Huff doubled in two runs in the third and he hit his 20th homer of the year in the seventh. Los Angeles starter Carlos Monasteries (3-3) took the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits in five innings. (UPI) -- Sam Bradford, the overall No. 1 choice in the 2010 NFL Draft, has signed the most lucrative contract in NFL history, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch said Friday. Bradford, who won the Heisman Trophy in 2008 while quarterbacking the Oklahoma Sooners, signed a six-year deal with the St. Louis Rams worth $78 million, with $50 million of that guaranteed, the report said. That would make it pro football's largest contract and put pressure on the Rams to get Bradford into a starting role as soon as possible. The Rams finished 1-15 last season to earn the No. 1 draft choice. Bradford, 23, threw for 4,720 yards and 50 touchdowns while winning the Heisman two years ago. Oklahoma set an NCAA record that year for most points in a 14-game season with 716. Bradford's 2009 campaign was cut short by a pair of shoulder injuries, the second one coming in a loss to Texas. (UPI) -- Bernhard Langer, seeking his second major title in as many weeks, shot another sub-par round Friday and took a two-shot lead at the U.S. Senior Open. Langer, coming off a victory last week at the British Senior Open, shot a 2-under 68 at the Sahalee Country Club course Friday for a two-day total of 137. The only other players under par after 36 holes were Tommy Armour III, John Cook and J.R. Roth. They were all at 1-under 139, a shot in front of Michael Allen, Loren Roberts, Tom Watson and Fred Couples. Tom Kite and Scott Simpson were both at 141. Watson, Kite and Simpson are all trying to become the eighth player to have won both the U.S. Open and U.S. Senior Open. Those who have done so include Arnold Palmer, Billy Casper, Gary Player, Orville Moody, Lee Trevino, Jack Nicklaus and Hale Irwin. Langer, who bested Corey Pavin by a shot last week at Carnoustie in Scotland, played the back nine in 3-under 32 Friday. He had an early tee time, but had to wait out a morning fog delay of 2 hours, 12 minutes. The final groups barely finished before dark. Mark Calcavecchia was among those at 142 and Pavin was at 147. Defending champion Fred Funk stood at 146. (UPI) -- Tony Stewart qualified first for a race at Pocono Raceway Friday, 10 years after winning his first pole at the track. Stewart turned in a lap of 171.393 mph on the 2.5-mile circuit and will start out front Sunday in the Sunoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500. It was the 14th pole of his Sprint Cup career, but he is still looking for his first race victory this season. The outside spot on the first row went to Juan Pablo Montoya, who won the pole last weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and led for most of the Brickyard 400 before crashing with less than 15 laps to go. "Last week was a rough week for the team, but to rebound at a place where we don't run that well, it's nice," Montoya said. Denny Hamlin, who has won the last two races held at Pocono, qualified third. He was followed by four-time winner Jeff Gordon and Ryan Newman. The next five qualifiers were Jimmie Johnson, A.J. Allmendinger, Jeff Burton, Jamie McMurray and Mark Martin. Points leader Kevin Harvick, who has a 184-point advantage over the second-place Gordon, will start 14th. Copyright 2010 by United Press International | Tennis Murray, Querrey reach LA semifinals LOS ANGELES (UPI) -- Andy Murray led three of the top four seeded players into the semifinals Friday at the Los Angeles Tennis Open. Murray, the event's No. 1 seed, finished the day's action by downing Alejandro Falla 7-6 (7-3), 6-1. That set up a semifinal meeting Saturday with fourth-seeded Feliciano Lopez, who ousted James Blake 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4. No. 2 seed Sam Querrey needed three sets to get past Rainer Schuettler while Janko Tipsarevic eliminated third-seeded Marcos Baghdatis. Querrey won over Schuettler 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4) and Tipsarevic was a 6-3, 7-5 winner over Baghdatis. Querrey has won three tournaments this year and reached the finals on four occasions.
