MLB: San Francisco 9, Texas 0

SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) -- Matt Cain threw 7 2/3 shutout innings Thursday and San Francisco put on a late surge to seize control of the World Series with a 9-0 victory over Texas.

San Francisco battered the Texas bullpen for seven runs in the eighth inning to blow open what had been a tense contest featuring a duel between Cain and C.J. Wilson.

The one-sided triumph left the Giants holding a 2-0 advantage in the best-of-seven series, which will resume Saturday with the first World Series game ever played in Arlington, Texas.

The teams combined for 18 runs, 25 hits and six errors in San Francisco's Game 1 victory and until the late-game explosion by the Giants, Game 2 was very different.

The contest began to go the way of the Giants, however, when Edgar Renteria hit a one-out homer off Wilson in the fifth on an 0-1 pitch.

Cain had preserved a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth after Ian Kinsler had led off the inning with a double and the San Francisco starter escaped trouble again in the sixth to keep the Giants in front.

Texas put runners on second and third with one away, but Cain got Nelson Cruz on a popup in foul territory and retired Kinsler on a fly ball to right to end the threat.

San Francisco added a run in the seventh when Cody Ross drew a lead-off walk, moved to second on a groundout by Aubrey Huff and came in on Juan Uribe's single.

The Rangers then saw all hopes of a comeback erased by the bombardment of four relief pitchers in the eighth -- all of the damage being done after the first two batters had been retired.

San Francisco scored in the eighth on a pair of bases-loaded walks to Huff and Uribe, a two-run single by Renteria, a two-run triple by Aaron Rowand and an RBI double by Andres Torres.

Cain allowed four hits and walked two. Wilson gave up two runs on three hits in six innings before the Texas relief corps was taken apart.

San Francisco is two wins away from its first World Series title since moving from New York more than a half century ago. The last triumph for the Giants came in 1954 and they have come up short in four World Series appearances since then.

NBA: Phoenix 110, Utah 94

SALT LAKE CITY (UPI) -- Steve Nash propelled Phoenix to a big second quarter Thursday and the Suns won for the first time this season with a 110-94 decision over Utah.

Phoenix struggled down the stretch in its season-opening loss to Portland, but the Suns easily protected a 16-point halftime lead against the Jazz.

Nash and Hakim Warrick both scored 18 points and Jason Richardson had 16 for the Suns, who made 10 3-point attempts and held Utah to 42 percent shooting from the field.

Phoenix had only a two-point lead in the opening moments of the second quarter, but outscored Utah in the period by 11 for a 58-42 cushion.

The Jazz came no closer than a dozen points during the second half.

Al Jefferson led Utah with 20 points and Paul Millsap had 19 to go with 12 rebounds.

Two share PGA lead in South Korea

SELANGOR, Malaysia (UPI) -- Pariya Junhasavasdikul had a late charge Friday and is tied with Ben Crane for first halfway through the PGA Tour-sanctioned Asia Pacific Classic Malaysia.

Junhasavasdikul had five birdies in his last seven holes and shot 6-under 65 and Crane had a bogey-free 7-under 64, putting them at 11-under 131 after 36 holes.

First-round leader Ricky Barnes shot 69 and is tied with Ryan Moore (68) for third at 10-under 132. Carl Pettersson (68) is in fifth at 9-under.

Crane started the day in a tie for 10th after a first round that included an eagle and two bogeys. He was much more consistent Friday, scattering seven birdies across his card. He had a birdie at the first hole, which he had bogeyed Thursday, and made the turn at 4-under. He added a birdie at 11 and moved into the lead with birdies at 15 and 17.

Junhasavasdikul was 1-under after 11 holes with bogeys at 4 and 11. But he ran off three consecutive birdies and, after a par at No. 15, had back-to-back birdies in getting to 6-under for the day.

NHL: Colorado 6, Calgary 5

CALGARY, Alberta (UPI) -- Daniel Winnik scored on a slap shot with 2:20 to play Thursday, lifting Colorado to a wild 6-5 victory over Calgary.

Chris Stewart produced a hat trick for the Avalanche, running his goal total to seven, but he did not figure in the scoring during a dramatic third period that saw Colorado rally to take the lead, fall back into a tie and then win it on Winnik's goal.

Colorado snapped a three-game losing streak and did so despite a rough night for Peter Budaj, who will be the team's No. 1 goalie for an indefinite period due to an injury suffered by Craig Anderson.

The Flames had a 4-3 lead heading into the final period, but the Avalanche moved in front on goals by Brandon Yip and T.J. Galiardi.

Alex Tanguay scored with 5:35 to go to tie it before Winnik rifled a shot past Henrik Karlsson.

Karlsson, who won in his NHL debut last Friday, allowed six goals on 36 shots.

Stewart's hat trick was the second of his career. He scored Colorado's first three goals, the last two coming 29 seconds apart late in the second period to bring about a 3-3 tie.

Soccer

MLS: Colorado 1, Columbus 0

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (UPI) -- Pablo Mastroeni scored in the 23rd minute Thursday to give Colorado a 1-0 decision over Columbus in the opening leg of their playoff series.

It was the first post-season game of the year in Major League Soccer and Colorado will have the advantage to start when the teams meet in the second leg at Columbus on Nov. 6.

Mastroeni appeared in the 16th playoff game of his career, equaling the most in club history, and it was the first post-season goal for the Colorado captain.

The game's only goal came after Omar Cummings brought the ball down the right side and crossed into the box to Conor Casey.

Casey was well defended and he flicked the ball across the box to a wide open Mastroeni.

Columbus goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum had no chance to stop Mastroeni's shot. Gruenebaum was playing in place of William Hesmer, who suffered a shoulder injury at the end of the regular season and will be out for all of the playoffs.

In the other three first-round playoff series, Dallas will meet Salt Lake City, San Jose will face New York and Los Angeles will take on Seattle. The Dallas-Salt Lake and San Jose-New York series will begin Saturday. The Los Angeles-Seattle series opens Sunday.
