Teen questioned in Chicago cop slaying

CHICAGO (UPI) -- A person of interest was being questioned in the deaths of a Chicago police officer and a former Chicago Housing Authority officer, sources said.

Law enforcement sources told the Chicago Tribune the 19-year-old parolee lives in the immediate neighborhood where Officer Michael Flisk and former CHA officer Stephen Peters were shot Friday as they investigated the burglary of Peters' car.

Russia plant begins scrapping chem weapons

POCHEP, Russia (UPI) -- A new plant that destroys Soviet-era chemical weapons has begun operations, Russia's industrial technology watchdog agency said Sunday.

The plant is located in Pochep, 250 miles southwest of Moscow, and is the sixth facility in Russia to dismantle and dispose of Cold War chemical weapons.

Early turnout light in Haitian election

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (UPI) -- Voting got off to a slow start Sunday in Haiti where 18 presidential candidates are on the ballot, the BBC reported.

The British network said its correspondents saw only a trickle of voters at the polls in the early goings of the first election since January's massive earthquake killed 230,000 people and caused widespread devastation.

The large slate of candidates means a runoff could be necessary Jan. 16.

Iraq airport shut down after shooting

BAGHDAD (UPI) -- Iraqi security officials say Baghdad International Airport was shut down for a time Sunday after an airport employee was shot and killed by U.S. troops.

Sources told Kuwait's KUNA news service that the deadly encounter occurred near a security checkpoint outside the airport when the employee apparently approached at high speed and refused to stop.
