Consumer Corner: Now the serious shopping

CHICAGO (UPI) -- With less than a week to go before Christmas, last-minute shoppers were scrambling to find those elusive perfect gifts for the right price.

ABC offered five suggestions for Web sites that stalk deals automatically, including Groupon, which recently turned down a multibillion-dollar buyout offer from Google. Groupon, LivingSocial and ScreaminDailyDeals all offer discounts on products, services and experiences.

Business cheers Calif. diesel rule delay

SACRAMENTO (UPI) -- The trucking and construction industry praised California regulators for delaying implementation of the bulk of new regulations on diesel emissions.

The move was hailed as a positive gesture to industries hit hard by the recession and are continuing to struggle to recover, the Los Angeles Times said Saturday.

GM picks new head of global marketing

DETROIT (UPI) -- U.S. automaker General Motors Co. named former Nissan and Hyundai marketing executive Joel Ewanick to lead its marketing worldwide.

Ewanick, at GM for less than a year, currently holds the post of vice president of U.S. marketing, the Detroit Free Press reported Saturday.

He worked briefly at Nissan after serving as vice president of marketing at Hyundai Motor America.

Retailers dropping prices in sales push

NEW YORK (UPI) -- T'was the Saturday before Christmas and all through the mall the deals were getting better, U.S. retailers said.

"The magic number is going to be 50 percent off. Retailers are really holding the line there," said NPD Group chief retail analyst Marshal Cohen, The Detroit News reported.
