Smiling Squid
Gear/art for all your wordplay needs
One of the drawbacks of making a good pun is it makes you sound smug, nerdy and kind of like a pathetic dad nothing. There are no drawbacks to good puns. Proving that has to be true, The Smiling Squid Collection.
From a sister-sister duo (one draws the art, the other cracks the jokes), SSC's a collection of punny, play-on-word illustrations that they slap on everything from tees, greeting cards, and iPhone cases to calendars, clocks, and coasters, though in their guidance counselor's opinion those last things don't really deserve it. Stuff you want to hate but actually can't get enough of from the art/lit world includes a pipe-smoking Sherlock Holmes standing against a rock/fossil layer backdrop above, "Sedimentary, my Dear Watson"; a formal portrait of the famed 16th century Spanish artistic lizard, El Gecko; and a modern take on da Vinci's renowned sculpture holding a plate of green gelatin entitled Michaelanjello -- but not Michaelanjello shots, as those are only available at Signore Frog's. There's also animal cleverness like a Victorian-inspired pic of Merinos flying old pedal helicopters (Sheep Thrills), a b/w drawing of two beetles (Lesser of Two Weevils); a large flightless bird from New Zealand with the circle/line (No Moa, Extinction is Forever); and an ancient coelacanth framed by the slogan Abercrombie and Fish, which isn't spelled right since it's actually -- oh, right, the coelacanth is a... they're still going, huh?
Yes they are, but for just two more: a burly wildebeest above the question, What's Gnu?, and a man being bitten by a toothy 19th century giant-front-wheeled bicycle called A Vicious Cycle, also what people sitting around making puns tend to be in, 'til you tell them to take a bike, ahh, hike! IT WON'T EVER STOP!
Laugh and/or groan at the entire lot at CafePress.com or their shop on Etsy.com
