Colored snow falls in Russia

SAMARA, Russia (UPI) -- An unusual colored snowfall settled on several areas of the southeastern Russian city of Samara on New Year's Eve, officials said.

A spokesman for the Emergencies Ministry said the gray and beige colored snow is not a health threat to the city's residents, RIA Novosti reported.

Experts say they believe the colored snow was a result of sandstorms in Kazakhstan mixing sand and clay into the falling snow.

Alberta town now skates on plastic ice

FORT CHIPEWYAN, Alberta (UPI) -- A small town in northern Alberta has become the first in Canada or the United States to acquire a synthetic hockey rink big enough for an NHL game.

The operator of the Archie Simpson Arena in Fort Chipewyan said the artificial ice, even at a cost of half a million dollars, will save money and is more environmentally friendly than ice, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported. It is also adaptable -- in winter, the plastic can be a base for a real ice rink.

Troy Nice told the CBC the feel of the synthetic ice is different.

"I've skated on it and it makes you work a little harder," Nice said. "So on a positive note, it'll make the people who aren't great skaters probably improve. Once your blades get a little heated, a little warm, then it's like skating on regular ice."

The plastic can be turned over after 10 years, doubling its lifespan. That makes it seem like a bargain when refrigeration units cost as much as $2 million with maintenance of $300,000 a year.

The rink, replacing one destroyed in 2004 when snow overloaded the roof, is owned by Wood Buffalo, the regional municipality.

Car was too small for stolen TV

SACRAMENTO (UPI) -- Authorities in California said a trio of would-be TV thieves were foiled by the small size of their intended getaway car.

Sacramento police said the burglars took the TV from a Sedley Court home about 4 p.m. PST Sunday and left the large set on the sidewalk when it would not fit in their Lexus, The Sacramento Bee reported .

Police said information from a neighbor who witnessed the incident led them to trace the Lexus to a 19-year-old man, whom police did not identify.

The man was arrested on suspicion of possession of stolen property and officers were searching for two alleged accomplices, police said.

Triplets, 7, win chess nationals

EAST WINDSOR, Fla. (UPI) -- A set of 7-year-old triplets from New Jersey was dubbed the top team in the first grade section of the National Scholastic K-12 Chess Championship in Florida.

Katerina Varsou of East Windsor said her fraternal triplets, Andreas, Nicholas and Constantine Oskiper, only started playing chess about a year before taking the top spot at the Dec. 10-12 tournament, The New York Times reported.

The boys played as a team, adding together their scores at the end of the games.

"I've seen them more cheering for each other in the nationals than I have seen them do before," Varsou said.

The United States Chess Federation said it marked the first time a tournament had been won by a team of triplets.
