Canoe Coming Out Party
Vintage Americana pops up
Fri Feb 4th, 5:30-10:00pm at Public School: 1021 E 7th St; Central East

Without her small towns, America would lose so much, though it might be worth it if it meant John Mellencamp would finally stop writing songs. To get a hold of what small towns are best for -- really cheap goods -- hit Canoe Clothing's pop-up shop.

Helmed by a relocated San Fran designer whose getting-to-know-TX day trips led to a wealth of vintage clothing finds, Canoe's a treasure trove of gently used American workwear, priced to be affordable for said workers, and set to be unveiled this Friday at a one-night-only pop-up at Public School, an event at which, just like behind real public schools, there will also be plenty of alcohol. The initial public offering includes classic outerwear like a red & black plaid JC Penney hunting jacket, a gray Woolrich coat with bright geometrical patterns, and a red LL Bean vest that, despite being puffy, will not cost you Mo' Money, though there's never any guarantee when it comes to Mo' Problems. More real-deal apparel includes a red/green plaid shacket (shirt+jacket) from Maine Guide and a blue/green plaid from Pendleton, as well as kicks like Thorogood Tall Lace work boots and water-repellent Duck Boots, the one time you won't complain about footing the bill.

In addition to unearthing vintage duds, the Canoeist has also spent the last six months learning leatherworking, and during the event she'll be personally monogramming small goods like keychains and luggage tags. As for that booze: Friday's event'll have free whiskey, plus brews from Thirsty Planet and salumi/pickles from Salt and Time -- something that, as Austinites will learn on April 2nd, has not yet finished off John Mellencamp.

Until she announces her online shop, keep up with her finds at her delightful blog
