Modern Arks
Home furnishings made from 100-year-old shipping crates
Usually when you think of furniture involving a crate, you also think of a barrel, and if your friends find out that's where you're shopping, they'll suggest you find one to aim at yourself. Deck your home with crates that won't shame you, at Modern Arks.
Billing itself as "the home of the original shipping crate side table", Tennessee-based Arks turns flea market-sourced wooden liquor cases and other recycled relics into one-of-a-kind furniture, artwork, and other goods, thanks to the talent of artist/musician J.R. Bennett, who says that while he uses a modern design aesthetic, "the character of these historic relics remains intact", something that can also be said for Susan Lucci. Show appreciation for whiskey with the 17in-wide, wood-legged Cutty Sark table, with various red and black inspection stamps (London, NY, Texas...) all over, or keep it clean with laundry soap crates like the hairpin-legged Octagon Scouring Cleanser, and Our Own American Family Soap by James S. Kirk & Co, a cleaner that's sure to leave everything Spockless. For unstamped furnishings there're 26in-tall graying barnwood side tables (reclaimed from SE lumber yards), along with custom-sized coffee tables, all of which have "a mid-century industrial feel", which used to be totally cool in the workplace back then.
JR's also working on a barnwood credenza, and will make sketchbooks using antique novel and textbook covers, plus brown paper postcards stamped with found letterpress tiles with statements like "I Miss You Already", exactly what you said to Crate & Barrel after picking up a Troy Right Arm Chaise and a couple Gala Fondue Sets.
