Apple offers refund to iPad buyers

CUPERTINO, Calif. (UPI) -- Apple says it is offering a partial refund to purchasers of the first generation of its iPad tablet computer as it readies the debut of its second version.

The refund was announced a day after the price for the original iPad was dropped from $499 to $399, Sky News reported Friday.

Retail jobs losing to automation

LOS ANGELES (UPI) -- Automation is causing retail jobs to disappear as robots, vending machines and touch-screen kiosks are increasingly replacing human workers, U.S. analysts say.

As shoppers adjust to self-service, the loss of retail positions could hamper efforts to bring down the nation's lingering high jobless rate, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday.

Funeral work gains as career choice

WHEELING, Ill. (UPI) -- Students at Illinois' only mortuary school say they are motivated by compassion, not ghoulishness.

Worsham College of Mortuary Science in Wheeling, marking its centennial year, has seen rising enrollment, The Chicago Tribune reports, with the tight job market seen as factor.

Across the United States, there were 2,857 students in 56 programs in 2009, an all-time high, the American Board of Funeral Service Education said.

Rasmussen seeks more voice in EU debate

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (UPI) -- Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said Denmark would have more clout in EU affairs if it adopted the euro.

Denmark will assume the EU presidency in January 2012, a rotating responsibility. However, in 2000 voters in Denmark rejected adoption of the euro.
