Violence escalating in Ivory Coast

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast (UPI) -- Violence is escalating in Ivory Coast where parts of the main city of Abidjan resembles a "war zone," an official with the U.N. refugee agency said.

Clashes between supporters of incumbent President Lauren Gbagbo and Alassane Ouattara have become frequent and violent, the BBC reported.

EU chief backs Arab revolts, more aid

BRUSSELS (UPI) -- The European Union's chief executive is calling for Moammar Gadhafi to quit and praising the revolt of Arab youth.

"I want to say this particularly to the young Arabs that are now fighting for freedom and democracy: We are on your side," European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, who took part in the 1974 Portuguese Revolution as a young man, said in Brussels.

Netanyahu: Binational state bad for Israel

JERUSALEM (UPI) -- Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, expected to offer a plan to re-start peace talks, said a single-nation solution would be "disastrous" for Israel.

Netanyahu, under fire internationally over the stalled talks and Israel's policies, told ministers he would present a plan to remove the threat of a binational state, in which Palestinians and Israelis would live in one state and have equal rights, Haaretz reported Friday.

Protesters hit streets for 'Day of Regret'

BAGHDAD (UPI) -- About 2,000 Iraqis gathered in Baghdad's Tahrir Square Friday for anti-government protests amid tight security and a ban on vehicular traffic, witnesses said.

In recent weeks, demonstrators across Iraq have been calling on their newly elected government to address a variety of issues, ranging from the lack of electricity to food availability.
