Taiwan nightclub fire kills 9

TAIPEI, Taiwan (UPI) -- A nightclub dance act started a fire that killed nine people early Sunday in central Taiwan, police said.

A male dancer at the 2-story bar in Taichung City was using a torch that ignited the ceiling and quickly filled the bar with smoke, the Central News Agency reported.

Lone juror spares St. Louis cop killer

ST. LOUIS (UPI) -- A lone juror refused to give the green light to sending a convicted St. Louis cop killer to death row, the prosecutor in the trial said.

The St. Louis County jury this weekend recommended life without parole for Todd Shepard, who was convicted in the cold-blooded shooting death of Sgt. Michael King in 2008.

"It only takes one person to control the entire outcome," said Prosecuting Attorney Robert McCulloch.

Apparent murder-suicide leaves three dead

NEW ORLEANS (UPI) -- New Orleans police say a 22-year-old man suffering from schizophrenia committed suicide after he allegedly shot and killed two children.

Authorities didn't name any of the victims, but said the children, a boy, 9, and a girl, 10, might be the alleged shooter's niece and nephew, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported Sunday.

Officers responding to a call of a shooting about 3 a.m. found the children on a sofa and the man lying on the floor.

Tea Party zeroes on Mitt's 'Romneycare'

BARTLETT, N.H. (UPI) -- Mitt Romney brought his still-unannounced presidential campaign to New Hampshire where the state's Tea Party faction warned him not to ignore them.

The universal healthcare legislation passed while Romney was governor Massachusetts is a major black mark on his record, activists said.
