Use iPhone to actually talk to people
Scientists don't have much of a social butterfly reputation, which is why despite spending time in the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries, Doc Brown still never found a woman to unzip his McFly. At least hellbent on increasing your social interaction, the very smart man behind Locaii.
Locaii's a location-based check-in app that goes beyond saying "I'm here" in that it actually encourages conversation amongst proximate users; it was designed and self-funded by a Dallas-based, Rice- and UTD-educated physicist, who was Niels Bohr'd to death with people burrowing into their iPhones and forgetting their surroundings. The gist:
Find friends via Facebook, or via the app itself, which lets you easily invite, say, that dude in the corner using Locaii
Divide contacts into "Trusted Friends" -- who get to see everything -- and "Friends" (a designation quickly upgradable if a "Friend" wants to look at your iPhone)
Pick people and locations (bars, restos, sports venues) to follow
Hit someplace and check in, either publicly or anonymously
Start a public convo about the location by posting a photo or observation ("Inspired crowd tonight"), or creating a poll w/ custom response options; e.g., "Should I sex this waitress?" could inspire "No, you'll get VD", "Yes, you'll get VD", or "Don't you mean could I sex this waitress?"
There's also a game element, called Identity, where going to the same few places'll get you labeled "Neighborhood Mogul"; adding tons of friends & followed locales makes you a "Neighborhood Pirate"; app-talking to very few folks makes you a "Conversational Ninja"; and yapping at a lot of folks makes you a "Conversational Rock Star" -- if Doc Brown had been one of those, maybe he'd have gotten a lot more Hills and Valleys.
