COL BKB: Iowa 67, Purdue 65

IOWA CITY, Iowa (UPI) -- Jarryd Cole struck for 16 points and 10 rebounds Saturday and Iowa dealt a blow to sixth-ranked Purdue's Big Ten title hopes with a 67-65 defeat.

Matt Gatens and Bryce Cartwright added 13 points each for the Hawkeyes (11-19, 4-14 Big Ten) who highlighted a disappointing season with a big win over their nationally ranked rival.

Cartwright contributed seven assists and six rebounds and Melsahn Basabe donated 11 points and eight boards for the victors.

The Boilermakers (25-6, 14-4) needed a victory over Iowa and a loss by Ohio State to Wisconsin Sunday for a share of the conference crown.

JaJuan Johnson led Purdue with 22 points and 12 rebounds and Lewis Jackson added 13 points in the loss.

Psychic could play part in murder trial

CHICAGO (UPI) -- A tarot card reader could play an important part in the trial of a woman accused of killing her pregnant friend over a man, Chicago officials said.

In opening statements Friday, assistant state attorney Patricia Fix told a Lake County jury she would prove Marni Yang shot and killed Rhoni Reuter and her unborn child to eliminate her "perceived competition" over a former Chicago Bears football player, the Chicago Tribune reported Saturday.

Fix said Yang was jealous of Reuter, who was allegedly having a relationship with Shaun Gayle, a former Bears player from the 1985 Super Bowl team. Yang reportedly had romantic interests in Gayle as well.

Christi Paschen, a self-described psychic, tarot card reader and friend of Yang, took police to an area where they dug up a bracelet inscribed with the word "pregnant." Paschen claims Yang confessed the killing to her and claimed the bracelet came from Reuter's apartment.

Yang is charged with first-degree murder and the intentional homicide of an unborn child. Investigators claim Yang shot Reuter at least six times in her Deerfield condominium on Oct. 4, 2007, aiming the first two shots at Reuter's stomach. Reuter was six months pregnant.

Fix called Reuter's pregnancy a "game changer." She described Yang's relationship with Gayle as part-time real estate agent and part-time sex partner.

Defense attorney William Hedrick said his client is innocent. He said Gayle was a womanizer with nearly 20 girlfriends and that police ignored other suspects in the case.

"His dating card was full," Hedrick said. "Marni Yang was not obsessed with Shaun Gayle. She understood Shaun Gayle had many girlfriends. … The real obsession in this case is the obsession of the Lake County Crimes Task Force with Marni Yang as a suspect."

Sabbatini charges to 5-shot Honda lead

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (UPI) -- Rory Sabbatini once again overcame windy conditions to post the day's low round, opening up a five-stroke lead at The Honda Classic in Florida.

Ignoring blustery conditions, Sabbatini shot a 4-under-par 66. It marked the second straight day he carded the lowest round -- his 64 during Friday's second round was also tops.

Sabbatini charged ahead to finish 54 holes with a 9-under 201, five better than former PGA Champion Y.E. Yang (67) and Jerry Kelly (68), both of whom finished at minus-4.

It marked the ninth time in Sabbatini's PGA Tour career he's entered the final round with a lead. He went on to victories in five of them, with the last one coming at the 2009 Byron Nelson Championship.

Gary Woodland (68) finished fourth at 3-under 207, and second-round leader Kyle Stanley stumbled to a 4-over 74, finishing one shot further back at 2-under 208.

NHL: New York Islanders 5, St. Louis 2

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (UPI) -- Andrew McDonald scored a pair of goals Saturday and the New York Islanders handed St. Louis its seventh loss in eight games with a 5-2 spanking.

Michael Grabner, P.A. Parenteau and John Tavares each added a goal and an assist for the Isles, who won for the fifth time in seven home games.

Al Montoya stopped 21-of-23 shots and improved to 4-2-1 since being called up from the minors with the win.

Chris Stewart and Andy McDonald scored for St. Louis, which dropped its fourth straight.

Ben Bishop turned aside just 17 shots for the Blues.

Janka bounces back with giant slalom win

KRANSIKA GORA, Slovenia (UPI) -- Carlo Janka of Switzerland won the men's World Cup giant slalom in Slovenia Saturday just two weeks after undergoing minor heart surgery.

Janka topped Alexis Pinturault of France and Ted Ligety of the United States with a combined-run time of 2 minutes, 27.05 seconds.

The 19-year-old Pinturault turned in a second-run time of 1:12.90 to jump into second place and just missed equaling Janka's total time by 2/100ths of a second.

Janka's victory at Kransika Gora came 10 days after undergoing a radio frequency catheter intervention procedure to correct an irregular heart beat.

The third-place finish extended Ligety's season lead in the giant slalom standings to 77 points over Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway. Svindal placed 22nd Saturday.

"Kranjska Gora is really technical the whole way," Ligety said. "It is really steep out of the start and really steep at the bottom and the middle rolls pretty much the whole way -- it never gives you a break."

Martin's last-lap heroics snag Vegas win

LAS VEGAS (UPI) -- Mark Martin marked his 49th career Nationwide Series win Saturday, taking a final-lap lead and hanging on for the victory at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Martin, appearing in his first Nationwide race in nearly two years, extended his all-time record for wins in the series. He overtook Brad Keselowski on the final lap when Keselowski cut a tire and bumped up against the wall.

Justin Allgaier came in second and Keselowski managed to hang on to third place after the mishap.

Danica Patrick, who gambled that she had enough fuel in the late going, came in fourth, marking the highest-ever finish for a female driver in a Nationwide race.

Daytona 500 champ Trevor Bayne rounded out the Top 5.

Petzschner, Kas hand Germany Davis lead

ZAGREB, Croatia (UPI) -- Germany took a 2-1 lead over Croatia in first-round Davis Cup play Saturday after Philipp Petzschner and Christopher Kas notched a doubles victory.

Petzschner and Kas rebounded from an early deficit to defeat Ivan Dodig and Ivo Karlovic 6-3, 3-6, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, giving the Germans the advantage heading into Sunday's reverse-singles phase.

Germany will turn to Philipp Kohlschreiber to wrap it up Sunday when he faces Marin Cilic in the first reverse-singles match.

Should Kohlschreiber lose, a fifth and decisive rubber match will be held, likely pitting Dodig and Florian Mayer.

The winner of the Austria-Croatia match will advance to July's quarterfinals against the winner of Austria and France.
