| | Baseball Dukes jailed on battery charges ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (UPI) -- Elijah Dukes, a former Tampa Bay Rays outfielder, was being held in jail without bail on charges of aggravated battery of a pregnant woman, officials said.
Dukes, 26, was also wanted on a warrant for contempt of court and driving with a suspended or revoked license, the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times reported Thursday.
He has previously been arrested for contempt of court and failing to appear.
In 2010 Dukes, a Tampa native who also played for the Washington Nationals, owed three women a total of $143,000 in child support and alimony.

| | Basketball Women's basketball player stabbed to death MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (UPI) -- A women's basketball player at Middle Tennessee State University was stabbed to death and her roommate has been arrested and charged with murder, police said.
Tina Stewart, 21, was fatally stabbed Wednesday night at an apartment complex near the university campus, The (Nashville) Tennessean reported.
She was taken to Middle Tennessee Medical Center in Murfreesboro where she died, the newspaper said.
Her roommate, Shanterrica Madden, 18, a freshman at MTSU, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, police said.
"There was an argument," Murfreesboro Police spokesman Kyle Evans said. "During that argument, Madden stabbed the victim."
Stewart suffered multiple traumatic wounds, Evans said.
Her death comes just four days before the NTSU Lady Raiders are scheduled to play their first game in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Hot Springs, Ark., school officials said.
"The team is devastated," Athletic Director Chris Massaro said. "We will work on this together. One step at a time."

| | Football Students want Vick high school jersey back NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (UPI) -- Students at the Virginia high school attended by NFL quarterback Michael Vick say they want his jersey, taken down after his dogfighting confession, re-hung.
School officials at Warwick High in Newport News, Va., said the jersey became a distraction when Vick's legal problems came to light, and it was taken down in September 2007, WAVY-TV, Portsmouth, reported Thursday.
It was never put back up.
Warwick senior Mario Lawrence says having it re-hung is a matter of school pride.
"I love my school," Lawrence said. "Warwick Raiders all day! I've been in over 10 clubs since I've been in high school."
Lawrence says he's set himself one more goal before he graduates in June.
"I want to get Michael Vick's jersey re-framed back at school," he said. "It used to be up when I was a freshman and then they took it down.
"He's doing really good now," Lawrence said of Vick. "You know everyone makes mistakes. After he made mistakes, he just didn't stay down. He got up and just rebuilt his self. That's an inspiration for high school students."
Lawrence created a Facebook page to drum up support and has asked Warwick administrators to re-hang the jersey.
"It was for his high school achievements," Lawrence said.

| | Soccer 2014 World Cup allocations set ZURICH, Switzerland (UPI) -- The allocations of slots, including 13 for European teams, for the 2014 World Cup will remain the same as last year, soccer's governing body said Thursday.
FIFA, soccer's world federation, said 13 spots in the 32-team field will be set aside for European teams while South America could have as many as six teams in the 2014 tournament.
The regional allocations were unchanged from 2010 with 13 for Europe, five for Africa, four -- not counting the automatic berth for Brazil as the host team -- for South America and Asia. Teams from North American, Central America and the Caribbean -- a region known as CONCACAF -- will compete for three places.
The other two spots in the field will be awarded to teams from South America, Asia, Oceanic and CONCACAF that win two-legged playoff series.
It is possible for South America to have six teams -- its four automatic berths, host Brazil and one from the playoff series.
Africa had six teams qualify for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, but by losing the automatic entry for the host team, the continent will have five teams in the 2014 World Cup.

| | Tennis Austria calling on Melzer for Davis duty VIENNA (UPI) -- Jurgen Melzer, a Top 10 player in both singles and doubles, will have three matches this weekend in Austria's Davis Cup series against France.
France was the runner-up in Davis Cup play last year but will need to win at least three matches this weekend to advance to the 2011 quarterfinals. The Austria-France series winner next meets either Croatia or Germany in the next round in July.
The matches are to be played indoors on a clay court in a converted aircraft hangar at Vienna's airport.
Melzer is ranked a career-best No. 10 in the world in singles and is eighth in doubles, both are the highest among the players on hand this weekend.
Austria will send Melzer out to open the best-of-five series Friday against No. 55-ranked Jeremy Chardy before Stefan Koubek plays Gilles Simon, who is ranked 30th.
Melzer and Oliver Marach, a strong 12th in the world doubles ranking, are to team against Frenchmen Julien Benneteau and Michael Llodra, who are in the Top 40, in Saturday's doubles match.
Reverse singles are on hand for Sunday with Melzer again going first, this time against Simon, with Koubek getting the match 5 call against Chardy.
