Orioles relax facial hair policy

BALTIMORE (UPI) -- The Baltimore Orioles say they've relaxed their facial hair policy and players will be allowed to wear well-trimmed beards.

Manager Buck Showalter confirmed he has gotten approval from ownership to relax the policy to a limited extent, but with a condition.

"It's kind of 'Can they keep it presentable?'" Showalter told The Baltimore Sun. "They're going to police themselves."

The issue was sparked by the Oriole's acquisition of two veteran players, Derrek Lee and Vladimir Guerrero; both have long worn goatees.

"I asked Derrek how long he had that, and he said he couldn't remember when he didn't," Showalter said, "and he's one of the really good clubhouse-presence guys."

Showalter told the players that if having the option of wearing a well-trimmed beard was important to them, he would make an attempt to relax the policy, in effect for most of owner Peter Angelos' tenure.

The Orioles players seem to be enjoying their new-found freedom.

"It's cool for me, and I have like 12 facial hairs," said Adam Jones, now sporting a goatee. "But some of these guys have had goatees their whole career. It's cool that our ownership has that flexibility."

Nuggets sign coach Karl to extension

DENVER (UPI) -- The Denver Nuggets and Coach George Karl have agreed to a multi-year contract extension, the team said Tuesday.

Karl, who has been the Nuggets' coach since January 2005, has inked a three-deal, The Denver Post reported.

Nuggets Vice President of Basketball Operations Masai Ujiri said keeping Karl on board was important after the team dealt stars Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups to New York last month.

"He's done a tremendous job since arriving in Denver, and particularly with the unique challenges of this season," Ujiri said. "With George on the bench, we have a bright future and everyone here is focused on finishing the season strong."

The Nuggets have played well since the trade and stood at 37-27, in line for a seventh straight playoff appearance under Karl, 59.

The veteran mentor, who returned to the bench this season after a bout with neck and throat cancer, is in his 23rd season as an NBA head coach and holds a 1,023-698 career record.

NFL players seeking owners' financial info

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- NFL players are demanding more financial information from team owners as collective bargaining talks continue, sources told The Washington Post Tuesday.

Citing "sources on both sides of the dispute," the newspaper said negotiators for the National Football League Players Association are seeking more detailed numbers relating to the league's $9.2 billion revenue pie.

But it was unclear whether owners would be willing to "open the books" as a 13th day of negotiations were held in the Washington office of a federal mediator.

The deadline to produce a new contract covering revenues and other thorny issues was extended to Friday after the players reportedly pulled back from a plan to file an antitrust lawsuit meant to prevent an owners' lockout.

The Post said players have been demanding throughout the negotiations that team owners justify their requests for concessions by sharing more of their financial information.

Two cyclists have doping bans upheld

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (UPI) -- Italian cyclists Pietro Caucchioli and Franco Pellizotti, accused of anti-doping violations, had two-year bans from competition upheld Tuesday.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport, in a ruling Tuesday, said it upheld a two-year suspension of Caucchioli handed down by the International Cycling Union. The disciplinary action is retroactive to June 18, 2009.

The ICU in June 2009 accused Caucchioli of using prohibited methods of enhancing oxygen transfer, also known as blood doping. He was suspended from competition but appealed, claiming testing "irregularities." CAS said those allegations couldn't have affected the outcome of the testing.

CAS upheld an ICU appeal of a decision that had exonerated Pellizotti of a doping infraction, which also involved alleged enhancing oxygen transfer. Pellizotti's original two-year suspension began May 3, 2010.

That was reinstated and CAS ordered Pellizotti to pay a fine of more than $160,000 while vacating any of his race results as of May 7, 2009.
