Braves' Salazar better after hit to face

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (UPI) -- Atlanta Braves minor league Manager Luis Salazar is improving after being hit in the face by a line drive Wednesday in Florida, the team said.

Salazar was flown to Orlando Regional Hospital by helicopter after being struck in the Braves' dugout at Champion Stadium, the team's spring training home in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

He lost consciousness and appeared stiff as he fell and landed on his face, MLB.com reported.

A Braves spokesman said Salazar had partially regained consciousness and was breathing on his own.

The 54-year-old Salazar, manager of Atlanta's Class A Lynchburg, Tenn., affiliate, was hit when Braves catcher Brian McCann pulled a line drive into the home team's dugout.

The former major league third baseman suffered multiple facial fractures and will need to undergo more tests on his left eye, Braves General Manager Frank Wren told the Web site.

"(The doctors) were very concerned when he got to the hospital," Wren said. "Some of that has been relieved by the latest tests and how he's responded."

No suspension for Boston's Chara after hit

NEW YORK (UPI) -- Boston Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara won't be suspended for a hit that put Montreal forward Max Pacioretty in the hospital, the NHL said Wednesday.

Pacioretty was trying to get past Chara near center ice during the second period of Tuesday's game at the Bell Centre in Montreal when the Boston star squeezed him along the boards near the players' bench.

Pacioretty's head then violently collided with an exposed stanchion as the momentum carried the pair forward. The 22-year-old was carried off the ice on a stretcher and later diagnosed with a broken vertebra and a severe concussion after being hospitalized.

Chara was given a major penalty and a game misconduct, but NHL Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations Mike Murphy said Chara didn't intentionally target Pacioretty's head, which would have been grounds for suspension.

"This was a hockey play that resulted in an injury because of the player colliding with the stanchion and then the ice surface," Murphy said in a statement.

Montreal head Coach Jacques Martin blasted the decision, telling reporters, "The league has to deal with those issues. It's not the first time. It seems to be getting worse and worse."

Kelly Slater wins ASP season opener

SNAPPER ROCKS, Australia (UPI) -- The professional surfing tour kicked off Wednesday with Kelly Slater of the United States winning the Quicksilver Pro Gold Coast contest in Australia.

The 10-time Association of Surfing Professional world champion won the 49th event of his career by topping Australian Taj Burrow with 11.20 points to 10.17.

Slater put together his best heat of the tournament in the finals after a solid but not spectacular preliminary series.

"I don't think I'm the only one that thought Taj was the standout of the event." Slater said. "At some point I had to stop getting 9s and I just picked the right heat."

Burrow was indeed the talk of the event in Queensland. He knocked off American Brett Simpson and South African Jordy Smith on the final day before running into Slater at the end of the day. "It was a fun event and it's just a bummer the waves didn't hang in there at the end," he said.
