| Dear Readers, In today's Women's History Month feature, we highlight five female writers from the 19th century. While their names are well known today, all of them published anonymously or under male pseudonyms, because at the time, it was unseemly for women to write books.
On March 10, 1949, a jury found U.S.-born Nazi propagandist Mildred E. Gillars, the radio broadcaster known as "Axis Sally," guilty of treason. The timing is ironic, as U.S. Rep. Peter King today holds controversial hearings into whether American citizens are being recruited by foreign terrorist groups.
Violinist Pablo Sarasate was born in the town of Pamplona in northern Spain on March 10, 1844. He was a figure of tremendous national and international regard. The distinctly Spanish flavor of his compositions, combined with his masterful technique and elaborate musical arrangements, have earned him a well-deserved place in the classical music hall of fame.
