Gadhafi tells world he's not leaving

TRIPOLI, Libya (UPI) -- The military dictator of Libya broadcast a message Saturday to the world saying he wants negotiations on political reform, but that he won't be forced out.

"I'm not leaving my country," Col. Moammar Gadhafi said during an 80-minute television address from Tripoli. "No one can force me to leave my country and no one can tell me not to fight for my country."

Earthquake rattles Panama

PANAMA CITY, Panama (UPI) -- The U.S. Geological Survey says a 6-magnitude earthquake shook southern Panama Saturday.

"Everyone started screaming," said Vanessa del Leon, who told CNN that she felt the earthquake in David, about 110 miles south of the earthquake's epicenter. "We heard a lot of things breaking and computer keyboards smashing on the floor. This hotel has eight floors and it swayed like a palm tree."

Taliban announces spring offensive

KABUL, Afghanistan (UPI) -- The Taliban announced the start of a spring offensive across Afghanistan in a statement Saturday.

The group said that fighting would start Sunday and it warned civilians to keep away from military bases, government buildings and convoys, the BBC reported.

The statement said the insurgent group would attack "foreign invading forces, members of their spy networks and other spies, high-ranking officials of the Kabul puppet administration."

Damage, death common factors from storms

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (UPI) -- The University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa has canceled the rest of the school year because of the tornado that killed three students, officials said.

The campus was spared, but the 30,000 students and 5,000 faculty members are deeply affected by the tragedy that left nearly 300 people dead in a series of tornadoes that swept across the U.S. South this week, The New York Times reported Saturday.
