| | Baseball MLB: Arizona 11, Chicago Cubs 2 PHOENIX (UPI) -- Stephen Drew's grand slam homer highlighted a seven-run first inning Thursday that allowed the Arizona Diamondbacks to coast past the Chicago Cubs 11-2.
Chicago starter Ryan Dempster (1-3) retired only one batter before giving way to a series of five relievers who tried to limit the damage in what turned out to be the fourth straight loss for the Cubs.
Chris Young doubled to open the first, Kelly Johnson walked and Justin Upton was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Drew then hit an 0-2 pitch over the wall in right for his second home run of the season.
After Miguel Montero grounded out, Arizona again loaded the bases on consecutive walks to Melvin Mora, Russell Branyan and Gerardo Parra. Barry Enright singled in the fifth run of the inning and Young singled home two more in his second at-bat of the frame to finally knock Dempster out of the game.
Montero added an RBI double in the second and hit a two-run homer in the third.
Enright (1-2) survived 6 2/3 innings to get the easy win. He allowed two runs on five hits with four walks and four strikeouts.

| | Football Carolina takes Cam Newton at No. 1 NEW YORK (UPI) -- Cam Newton, who survived an NCAA investigation to lead Auburn to a national championship, became the first player selected in the NFL draft Thursday.
Newton was one of three quarterbacks chosen among the first 10 players selected, the first time that has happened in a dozen years.
The Auburn star was surrounded by controversy during the 2010 campaign and many pro scouts did not believe he was among the 10 best players in the this year's draft class, but the Carolina Panthers took Newton with the No. 1 selection on a unique night in the history of the NFL.
The draft took place as the league's owners and players are locked in a dispute over how to divide the more than $9 billion a year produced by the nation's most popular sport.
Commissioner Roger Goodell, who heard a chorus of boos when he walked onto the Radio City Music Hall stage Thursday, said this week the players are trying to dismantle the structure that has led to the league's popularity. He stood on that stage, however, and warmly greeted each of the players chosen in the first round.
Among those players was Texas A&M linebacker Von Miller, chosen second overall by the Denver Broncos. Miller was the only collegian to have his name attached to an antitrust lawsuit against the league after NFL owners had locked out their players.
Only the first of the seven rounds of the draft was held Thursday. Ten of the 32 players selected were from the Southeastern Conference and eight competed in the Big 12. Twelve defensive linemen and eight offensive linemen were selected in the first round.
Alabama defensive tackle Marcell Dareus was chosen third by Buffalo, followed by Georgia receiver A.J. Green (Cincinnati) and LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson (Arizona).
The rest of the top 10 draftees were Alabama receiver Julio Jones (Atlanta), Missouri defensive end Aldon Smith (San Francisco), Washington quarterback Jake Locker (Tennessee), USC offensive tackle Tyron Smith (Dallas) and Missouri quarterback Blaine Gabbert (Jacksonville).
Alabama's Mark Ingram, the 2009 Heisman Trophy winner, was the only running back picked. He went to New Orleans, which traded away a 2012 first-round draft choice to New England to grab him in the No. 28 position.
Newton won the Heisman Trophy prior to leading Auburn to a win over Oregon in the national title game. He set single-season Auburn records for passing touchdowns (30), rushing touchdowns (20) and total offensive yards (4,327).
During the season the NCAA eventually gained proof that Newton's father had tried to sell his son's services to at least one collegiate team. Newton was allowed to keep playing because the NCAA could not prove he knew of his father's actions.
Carolina went 2-14 last season to qualify for the No. 1 choice. Carolina quarterbacks combined to throw for nine touchdowns and 21 interceptions in 2010.

| | Golf Rumford takes over Ballantine's golf lead ICHEON, South Korea (UPI) -- Brett Rumford fired a 9-under-par 63 Friday and bolted into a three-stroke lead at the European Tour's Ballantine's Championship in South Korea.
Rumford, the runner-up at the Ballantine's last year, was bogey-free in the second round and is at 10-under 134 halfway through the tournament. Soren Kjeldsen shot 6-under 66 and is tied at 7-under for second place with Miguel Angel Jimenez, who had a second-round 67.
First-round leader Damien McGrane turned in an even-par 72 Friday and is in group of four players tied for fourth at 6-under.
Rumford had opened the first round with bogeys in two of his first four holes. Playing the back nine first, he started relatively slowly with a pair of pars but got under for the day with birdies at Nos. 12 and 14. He made the turn at 4-under after birdies at 17 and 18.
Rumford made a big move with four birdies in the five-hole span of 2-6 and pushed further ahead with an eighth-hole birdie.
