The Multi-Sensory Ball Pits are well known for their therapeutic effects. They are designed to assist you in creating a multi-sensory environment. Ball pits have been awakening to people who are developmentally delayed, neurologically involved or living with birth disorders such as autism. They are also known to have the opposite effect on those who require relaxation. Inside a ball pit thousands of balls create a rainbow sea of fun, enticing people of all ages into the therapy environment and acting as sensory stimuli (visual, auditory, tactile).
Effectively performing therapy ball activities requires careful selection of the right therapy ball size. Because personal consultations are not always possible, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other professionals have constructed several guidelines to use when selecting the proper therapy ball size for seated activities.
When sitting upright on a therapy ball:
Feet should be flat on the ground - with an even weight distribution.
Knees should be level or slightly lower than the pelvis - creating an angle of 90 degrees or slightly greater at the hips and knees (thighs parallel to ground or pointing down slightly).
Pelvis, shoulders, and ears should be in a vertical line - the body should not be leaning in any direction as a counterbalance. Bouncing up and down lightly will usually produce this alignment.
A simpler method o Distance from the armpit to the middle finger tip = Ball diameter for that user.
Therapy balls generally come in a variety of different diametrical sizes and shapes. Each size and style can be used for different difficulty levels of balance, strength and activities in ball therapy.
It is important to note that height alone is not the only factor in determining ball size. Because the therapy balls are flexible and offer resistance, weight is also an important factor.
