Shooting Tip: Event Videography with Multiple Cameras

Event videography is always a challenge -- whether it's a wedding, a birthday party, a speech or a ribbon-cutting at your local mall, there's always going to be too much going on and only one chance to catch it all! Deciding to tackle the event with multiple cameras can relieve some of the stress that comes along with ensuring each moment is captured in full detail and will provide you with plenty of editing options during post production.

When shooting with multiple cameras, the number of camcorders you are using will help determine the placement of each. You will always want to have one camera dedicated to capturing the master shot. This camera is typically placed at the back of the room, set to a wide shot, and doesn't stop recording for the entire duration of the event. Essentially, it is your backup footage, and provides an option to cut back to if needed.

The second camera should be placed near the stage to capture the main event, and then opposite the main person of interest once the ceremony begins. This will ensure you get a nice shot of the people that your audience most expects to see, whether it's the bride and groom or a local dignitary making a speech. If you're using a third camera you may want to place it on the stage to get a two-shot of this person, if possible.

The most important factor to consider when shooting an event with multiple cameras is the wide shot. Having one camera locked down to capture the wide shot will allow you to concentrate on getting those closeup shots that really matter. Remember those two things and you should have plenty of options when it comes time to edit.
