[BGU] - Practice vs. 'Game Day'

Hey, it's Griff here from Blues Guitar Unleashed.

I'll admit, I'm not much of a sports guy. I don't know when baseball season ends or when football season starts. I usually don't even know who is playing in the Super Bowl until the day before the game.

But when I was a kid, I played almost every sport for at least a season or two, and there are some things I learned from that which apply to the guitar.

Particularly when it comes to playing chords, and switching from one to the next, you have to separate your practice time from your "game time."

What I mean is, when you practice, if you strum a chord and it doesn't sound right, you stop and try to fix it. You try to go back and make it sound perfect, adjusting your fingers by small amounts to get that perfect *ring* to it.

But when it's "game time" and you are playing along with the video or the audio clip, you can't stop! If something doesn't come out right... "Oh well!" You have to keep pace with the recording.

There's a reason the pro basketball players do layup after layup at practice. So that when the game comes along they can turn their brain off and let their body do what it is trained to do.

Your guitar playing will be the same way. The more you practice changing from E7 to B7, and do it slowly and correctly, the better your chances of nailing it on game day when you are playing along with the recording.

One final note, make sure you do a little bit of "game day" practice each day. Practice is good, but you need a scrimmage game too.

Talk soon,
Griff
