James K. Polk was a 'dark horse' candidate because he beat out better-known candidates at the Democratic nominating convention. His presidency was mainly spent fighting the war with Mexico. Despite the fact of Polk's youth, he was only forty-nine when he became president, he died three months after leaving office.
