Week 15: James Buchanan
Martin Kelly
From Martin Kelly, your Guide to American History
James Buchanan's time in office was dominated by the issue of slavery, especially since the Dred Scott decision was handed down soon after he took office. He was not nominated to run for reelection. After Lincoln won the election of 1860, there was nothing he could do to stop states from seceding from the Union before stepping down.
