T-Rex Sculpture Made Out Of Recycled Metal Parts

As if T-Rex, the big daddy of dinosaurs with a serious appetite to match, isn’t badass enough in the scaly flesh, now he’s been built out of scrap metal parts by sculptor Andrew Chase.

And, while this over two foot tall, and six foot long, metal sculpture is far from life sized, he would be no less intimidating than his normal sized self to, say, a mouse or hamster, or even that annoying Chihuahua next door.

All jokes aside, Andrew’s metal T-Rex would make a great stop motion puppet, a worthy successor to Ray Harryhausen’s classic Tyrannosaurus Rex puppet from the film One Million Years B.C. Check out all the other pics of this awesome metal dinosaur at the link below, because I feel like this guy has to be seen from all sides to be truly appreciated.

Like Comic Books With Mature Storylines? Then Check Out Damaged

Comics have come a long way from the days of pandering to children in order to sell a product. These days, they’re full of mature stories and subject matter that would make Golden Age Superman blush, and that’s how I like it. To me, a comic book with no spandex clad heroes in sight means I’ll be entertaining more than just my eyeballs when I dig in.

Enter the newest title from Radical Comics-Damaged. It’s a dark, edgy cop story with a serious noir edge, and lots of the old ultraviolence. The story centers around two cops/brothers, one of which will draw obvious comparison to the Punisher with his violent vigilante antics and attitude about killing bad guys.

Written by David Lapham (Crossed and Stray Bullets), Damaged pays homage to its obvious influences without becoming predictable, and the six issue mini series format means you will be left with a satisfying conclusion to the storyline.

The great thing about this series is it’s a throwback with modern flavor, a good pulp story that is familiar yet timeless, with a cast of characters that are iconic enough to exist in any era, and beautiful artwork by Leonardo Manco (Hellblazer and War Machine) that helps sell this realistic story about human nature, inner conflict and inescapable fate.

An Epic Level Performance Of Musical Nerdery

Musical nerdery doesn’t get much more epic than this performance by Bit Brigade, where they play the soundtrack to Mega Man II while the entire game is being played on a screen behind them.

And when I say the entire game I mean THE ENTIRE GAME, this video weighs in at an impressive 44 minutes and, to top it all off, they’re actually a really good band, so the show isn’t all gimmick and flash, it totally rocks!

Apparently there was a group of Canadian moralists who fought against violent, corrupting influences on children in the early 90s, and made their message known in a propaganda film entitled Not Just Fun And Games.

These squares despised toys, and had an awful lot of bad things to say about our beloved Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, probably because their fathers never bought them that G.I. Joe doll they always wanted.

Why pile on more hate for the poor mutants, morality police-haven’t they been through enough? I mean, they already live in the sewer, what more do you want?

Strange Felted Wool Sculptures By Zoe Williams

The subjects Zoe Williams sculpts out of felted wool are, for the most part, critters which look good with a bit of fuzz on them, even if that fuzz is contrasted by sharp and spiky bits.

Ultimately, they look too dangerous to pet, so I’d keep my hand tucked in my shirt if viewing them at a gallery show. They’re strange taxidermy style mounts meant to appeal to animal lovers, who also want to spruce up their world with a bold work of art.

A Professor Snape-Inspired Office

Logospilgrim is just a bit interested in the character of Severus Snape from Harry Potter. She has Snape tattoos, dresses like Snape, and has written two books about him. Her home office is a shrine packed with objects and decorations that would please him, including potion bottles that are presumably empty. You can view several more pictures at the link.

Patient Got $44 Million Bill for a Doctor’s Visit

Sure hospital bills are notorious for being expensive, but one New York man learned that he racked up an unusually high bill for a doctor's visit:

The hospital cured his pneumonia, but the bill — for an eye-popping $44 million — made him sick.

Unemployed doorman Alexis Rodriguez couldn’t believe his eyes when he opened an envelope from Bronx-Lebanon Hospital last week and saw what he appeared to owe.

“I almost had an asthma attack,” said Rodriguez, 28, just one of several hundred patients to receive absurdly inflated bills because of a “system error.”

His amount due was $44,776,587 for outpatient services that in reality amounted to no more than $300.

Employee was late because of a job interview with another firm.
Employee had to take a personal call from the state governor (turned out to be true).
The study was based on surveys of more than 3,000 hiring managers and human resource professionals and 7,780 U.S. workers.

Should Wearing Pajamas In Public Be Banned?

Do you like to go about town wearing comfy pajama pants? Not in Shreveport, Louisiana, you won't ... if a local parish commissioner has his way!

Caddo Parish District 3 Commission Michael Williams said it was an incident at a local Walmart that offended him and some elderly customers that spurred him to push for an ordinance that would prohibit wearing pajama pants in public.

"I saw a group of young men wearing pajama pants and house shoes," he said. "At the part where there should have been underwear," his private parts were showing through the fabric. [...]

"Pajamas are designed to be worn in the bedroom at night," Williams said. "If you can't (wear pajamas) at the Boardwalk or courthouse, why are you going to do it in a restaurant or in public? Today it's pajamas," Williams said. "Tomorrow it's underwear. Where does it stop?"

Don't worry people, there's always Pajama Jeans!

File Sharing Is Now a Religion in Sweden

Pirates and file-sharers, rejoice! The Missionary Church of Kopimism (just say it out loud) has been recognized as a religion in Sweden:

Since 2010 a group of self-confessed pirates have tried to get their beliefs recognized as an official religion in Sweden. After their request was denied several times, the Church of Kopimism – which holds CTRL+C and CTRL+V as sacred symbols – is now approved by the authorities as an official religion. The Church hopes that its official status will remove the legal stigma that surrounds file-sharing.

All around the world file-sharers are being chased by anti-piracy outfits and the authorities, and the situation in Sweden is no different. While copyright holders are often quick to label file-sharers as pirates, there is a large group of people who actually consider copying to be a sacred act.

Philosophy student Isak Gerson is such a religious file-sharer, and in an attempt to protect his unique belief system he founded The Missionary Church of Kopimism in 2010. In the hope that they could help prevent persecution for their beliefs, the Church then filed a request to be officially accepted by the authorities.

After two failed attempts, where the Church was asked to formalize its way of praying or meditation, the authorities finally recognized the organization as an official religion. The Church’s founder is ecstatic about this news, and hopes that it will motivate more people to come forward as ‘Kopimists’.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Murals

Camilo José Vergara takes photographs of street art. A popular subject for the art he finds is Martin Luther King, Jr. who appears in murals in city after city. Smithsonian has a dozen of Vergara’s pictures of these MLK installations, with some information about each one. The mural pictured here depicts the 1963 “I Have A Dream” speech, on a wall in Philadelphia. Link

The Curious Case of William James Clark

William James Clark was caught impersonating a Green Beret at a gun show in Alaska in 2010. Real veterans can spot a fake easier than those with no military experience realize. That story reached the FBI and Clark was arrested for a string of check fraud crimes. Clark eventually pled guilty to scamming over $66,000 from 224 people. But there’s a lot more to the story of William James Clark.

At a glance, Clark’s crime spree seems a couple notches above petty but not much different from the other 750,000 or so cases of check fraud that occur every year in the United States. But even though a dime-a-dozen crime is what did him in, Clark’s road to the Last Frontier is anything but ordinary.

Clark has a penchant for living a fake life. One time he assumed control of the scene of a bridge collapse disaster that had every imaginable type of real government boots on the ground. Another time he nearly caused a made-for-TV international crisis when he told the Russian Embassy he was working with the U.S. military to assassinate then-president Vladimir Putin.

AlaskaDispatch tells of Clark’s bizarre adventures that fueled speculation that he was a spy, a victim of government brainwashing, mentally ill, or possibly just an imaginative con man. Link -via Dark Roasted Blend

The Danger of Farting in Space

Between 1968 and 1971, researchers Edwin L. Murphy and Doris H. Calloway published three, count ‘em, three studies on flatulence. The 1969 paper was about astronauts and their farts, specifically a study to determine the level of flatulence produced by difference astronaut space diets. Picturing how the study went brings into focus the many indignities astronauts face for their shot at space travel.

Their paper formed part of a loose trilogy of flatulence-related papers that the pair worked on, which kicked off with 1968′s “The Use of Expired Air to Measure Intestinal Gas Formation” and concluded with 1971′s “Reduction of Intestinal Gas-Forming Properties of Legumes by Traditional and Experimental Food Processing Methods.” Truly, if you needed to know something about farting in the late 1960s or early 1970s, you went to Calloway and Murphy. I would kill to be able to put something like that on a business card.

Molly Rausch takes classic postage stamps and imagines the scenes that lay beyond their limited scope. She begins by pasting the stamp on paper and then adding watercolors and gouaches. Rausch does no research on the stamps, so her works are exercises in pure speculation (as the flying saucer over the White House suggests).

Life-size Storm Trooper Cake

Believe it or not, this is a completely edible cake. A 6′ 4″ tall Storm Trooper cake was constructed by Amanda Oakleaf Cakes for the Arisia Sci-Fi Convention in Boston. The project took ten people two weeks of work, but how they did it is no secret. By popular demand, the bakery posted a photo gallery that depicts the process of building the cake, which was later consumed by around 600 fans. Link -via Boing Boing

Zombified Left 4 Dead Valentine’s Day Cards

These adorable Valentine’s Day cards feature zombie characters from the Left 4 Dead video game series, and they’re full of dorky gamer humor, putrid sentimentality, and jokes about vomiting.
