YouTube's Online Editing Software

YouTube's Online Editing Software

Online web applications have begun to sneak into many producers' workflow. That being said, editing "in the cloud" has its ups and downs.

Video editing has even come to YouTube, although editing tools there are a little difficult to find given that YouTube is, of course, not primarily an editing site. Of the online editing tools we investigated, YouTube's is the simplest to use, although it's also the most limited. We really liked the clip trimmer feature and how it pops up when you activate it. This seems to help make less clutter in the user interface.

While YouTube's video editor is an easy interface to use, we did experience lag (buffering) while previewing clips in the editor. While it was a bit frustrating at times, there are so few transitions and effects that the impact of this buffering is less severe than it could be. For most people, the YouTube editing tool is a reasonable solution for sharing videos on YouTube itself, or for working with videos already uploaded to the service.
