| | Today's Buzz | | | | | - Social-network users get less shy about deleting contacts
Almost two-thirds of social-network users say they have deleted people from their "friends" list, compared with 56% in 2009, according to a Pew Research Center report. Users also are more likely to have removed comments or identifying tags. That reflects users' increasing concerns about privacy, but also the fact that people are growing more accustomed to using social networks as a primary communication tool, the report says. "[A]s social networking sites have become a mainstream communications channel in everyday life, profile owners have become more active managers of their profiles," the report says. Smartphone applications for social networks such as Facebook, YouTube, Flickr and Foursquare are theoretically capable of accessing a wide swath of personal data, with developers having access to text messages and even capable of intercepting phone calls, according to a report by London's Sunday Times. Facebook, however, says the report is "completely wrong" and that "no reading of user text messages" takes place, as the ability to read and write texts is included in its application only for testing reasons. Political candidates with a strong social media presence don't always see a corresponding bump at the ballot box, Gregory Ferenstein writes. While Twitter and Facebook users are highly visible and highly vocal, face-to-face contact and real-world peer pressure appear to be far more effective at influencing people's voting decisions. "[W]hile it is tempting to believe that the size of a candidate's online fan-base is significantly helpful in getting elected, the numbers just don't add up," Ferenstein writes. Ford attempted to use a Google+ Hangout to preview a video spot for its 2013 Mustang model -- but technical glitches meant that viewers were instead treated to a series of pictures of Ford rep Craig Daitch. The incident left one Google+ commenter joking that the new vehicle "looks like a middle aged white guy" before Ford realized the error and directed viewers to watch the spot on YouTube or Facebook. | | The Takeaway | | | | | - Smart marketers know their audience's schedule
Social media marketers need to be attuned to their audience's schedule to maximize the return on each post or tweet, Neil Draper writes. That means scheduling social content for times when your audience is most likely to be receptive and in a position to respond to calls to action. "Around noon ask your audience a question and they are prone to react, in the evening supply them with some information or an offer that rewards them for being a fan ... they will be more likely to share," Draper writes.
