Watch Princess Diana Meet Ludo From The Labyrinth

December 1, 1986 was a big day for Princess Diana and Prince Charles. It was the day they meant a real-life monster at the Labyrinth Royal Premiere. While film goers soon learned just how sweet Ludo was, keep in mind, this meet up occurred before the royals saw the film -for all they knew, he was a fan of ripping people’s arms off and munching on roasted fingernails like John used to do before we weaned him onto Corn Nuts. Of course, if you look at the expression on Di’s face, it looks like that’s what she assumed.

Propaganda Posters For The Hunger Games

With the overwhelming popularity of The Hunger Games, it’s not surprising that the interwebs is filling up with fan art created to satisfy even the hungriest Hunger-ling.

College Humor has created this series of funny propaganda posters based on the hit film, and whether you’re a fan of the movie or not I’m sure you’ll appreciate the dark humor and subtexts in the tag lines. Suddenly I really want to watch The Running Man and Surviving The Game back to back!

There’s nothing trashy about the great geeky trash cans over at Mental Floss. I really like this 3D graffiti trash can, but I have to wonder about how it will look when it was pulled away from the wall. It’s possible that it has a 2D horse behind the trash can, but that’s just not that cool.

Have any of you seen the moving trash cans at Disney’s California Adventure? Those definitely need to be added to this list.

Oldest Man-Made Animal Structures Found by Google Earth

Posted: 30 Mar 2012 08:03 PM PDT

It looks like simple mounds of earth from ground level, but when archaeologist Robert Benfer looked at Google Earth images of Peru, he discovered that they look like orcas, condors, and even a duck.

Archaeological evidence at the sites pegged the mounds at more than 4,000 years old - making them the oldest animal-shaped structures made by man:

Benfer discovered the mounds while looking at satellite photos of a site about which he'd long held suspicions. The feature seemed shaped like a condor, he said, but archaeological wisdom suggested that animal effigy mounds were a North-America-only phenomenon, with few exceptions, such as one at a Central America site in Mexico.

The satellite photos revealed furrows that looked like teeth as well as a burned charcoal area perfectly positioned in the spot where the eye of the bird would be. Global positional system (GPS) information and an archaeological investigation of the site convinced Benfer that he was, in fact, looking at a condor-shaped mound, with the eye likely being a site where offerings were burned. The condor is oriented according to astronomical rules: It lines up with the most extreme orientation of the Milky Way as seen from the Chillón Valley where the mound is found. [...]

The four large mounds are only the tip of the iceberg, he added — he has explored only five of the 54 valleys along the Peruvian coast and has found numerous smaller mounds, including ones shaped like orcas and even a duck. Many unexplored valleys likely hold more mounds, Benfer said.

"It's a totally unexpected find," he said. "It's especially unexpected to archaeologists like me who had walked over some of these sites before without realizing what we walked over."

Cops Break Into Insecure Homes in the Middle of the Night to Prevent Burglary

Posted: 30 Mar 2012 07:01 PM PDT

Police officers in a town in Essex, England, has a unique way of making sure the town's residents stay safe: the cops will break into their homes in the middle of the night.

Sleeping householders are going to be woken up in the middle of the night to discover someone breaking into their house - only to discover it is the police.

Police in Shoebury, Essex, have been going round testing doors and windows of houses to check if they have been left unlocked - and if they find an easy way in they will wake up the household to warn them their house is insecure.

The new police campaign is aimed at warning people of the dangers of late-night break ins - but predictably, those who have been woken have not been happy so far.

Well, I suppose it's better the cops than the burglars: Link

How to Cook Kudzu

Posted: 30 Mar 2012 05:15 PM PDT

(Video Link)

From 1935 through the 1950s, U.S. farmers planted kudzu to prevent soil erosion. This proved to be a bad idea. The vine spread rapidly, killing off other plants, including crops, across the southeastern United States. It’s an invasive plant eating away at productive farmland. Fight back by eating it, as this woman does by cooking kudzu into quiches.

Scientists Can Now Control Lightning Strikes with Laser

Posted: 30 Mar 2012 04:00 PM PDT

French scientists have just made a breakthrough in directing a lightning bolt by use of laser beams:

In 2008, a group led by André Mysyrowicz of the applied optics laboratory at ENSTA ParisTech in France took a trailer-sized laser to New Mexico for field experiments with clouds. The group found that its laser filaments increased electrical activity in storm clouds, but did not trigger lightning.

Now the group has reached two milestones on the road to practical lightning protection with a more compact laser. In one experiment in a military lab in Toulouse, France, they set up a high-voltage discharge with two possible targets about 2.5 metres away. With the laser off, the artificial lightning always hit the closer target. But with the laser on, generating a filament path to the farther target, the discharge went where it was directed.

In a second experiment, Mysyrowicz's team aimed the laser beam across 50 metres of a lab, passing 5 to 20 centimetres from a lightning-producing electrode and an oppositely charged electrode. Usually, lightning jumps straight from electrode to electrode, but with the laser on, the discharge jumped to the laser filament and followed it before jumping to the second electrode.

The driver managed to pull over safely and was attempting to change the tyre when fire erupted.

Country Fire Service crews took half an hour to put out the blaze, which destroyed the bus which had a KABOOM1 numberplate.

Can You Break Your Neck by Sneezing?

Posted: 30 Mar 2012 02:29 PM PDT

Apparently, you can. Twenty-eight-year-old Monique Jeffrey of Melbourne, Australia, sneezed so hard that she actually dislocated two vertebrae in her neck:

Monique—of Melbourne, Australia—who was alone at home with her 10-month-old baby, said it was incredibly painful after she sneezed: "I just knew something was wrong. I felt something move and I was in excruciating pain."

She was able to text her husband with a simple "Help can't move pls call." Emergency personell came to the rescue, taking her to Sandringham Hospital. Doctors told her she had a "wry neck" and asked her to do some exercises to move it again. But when her left arm went numb and started to tingle, the doctors immediately sent her to The Alfred hospital's spinal trauma unit, where they discovered that her two top vertebrae were dislocated.

She's lucky not to have been paralyzed, according to her doctors: Link - via Arbroath

Hipster Glasses: A New Trend in Court

Posted: 30 Mar 2012 01:59 PM PDT

Defendants have been wearing suits and ties to appear like upright citizens to juries for a long time, but that may not be enough for some. These people need ... hipster glasses!

Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Brittin noticed that 5 men he was prosecuting for a series of killings were wearing large-framed, non-prescription glasses, and decided to blow the Hipster Glasses conspiracy wide open:

Non-prescription “hipster” or “personality” glasses are on one hand simply a fashion fad. But they’ve also become something of a sensation in the District’s courthouse scene: Attorneys say inmates trade them before hearings, while friends and family sometimes deliver them during jailhouse visits. Some lawyers even supply them themselves. [...]

“They’re masks. They’re designed to confuse the witness and influence the jury,” said one prosecutor who is following the trial. Another said the defendants were “putting on a schoolboy act.”

Other defense attorneys chimed in on the effectiveness of the Hipster Glasses:

New York defense lawyer Harvey Slovis makes all his clients wear glasses: He calls them part of a “nerd defense.” The glasses, Slovis said in an interview, make people appear less intimidating. “Yes, it works,” he said.

Brain Is Not Like a Bowl of Spaghetti

Posted: 30 Mar 2012 10:04 AM PDT

A couple of years ago, John Farrier told us about a project to map the brain's neural connections (scientists call this connectomes). In this week's issue of Science, researchers published their findings that the brain actually has a simple, grid-like structure:

It was previously thought the inside of the brain resembled the assembly of a bowl of spaghetti noodles. Researchers and scientists, funded by the National Science Foundation, have now discovered that a more uniformed grid-like pattern makes up the connections of the brain.

Scientists [... used] magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology to map the three-dimensional, scaffold fiber architecture of the brain. This technology, used for the first time in this manner, determined that the pathways of the brain pass through tissue that resembles a grid-like structure.

"By looking at how the pathways fit in the brain, we anticipated the connectivity to resemble that of a bowl of spaghetti, a very narrow and discreet object," said Van J. Wedeen, associate professor of Radiology, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School and Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging.

"We discovered that the pathways in the top of the brain are all organized like woven sheets with the fibers running in two directions in the sheets and in a third direction perpendicular to the sheets. These sheets all stack together so that the entire connectivity of the brain follows three precisely defined directions."

Dead Snake Bites Man

Posted: 30 Mar 2012 07:36 AM PDT

A 41-year-old homeless man in Mobile, Alabama was treated with antivenom after he was bitten by a decapitated cottonmouth.

A friend of the man described the incident.

"I saw it swimming down along the creek and everything. And, I ran down and hit it with the machete and killed it and brought it up. He picked the head up and stuck himself right in the finger with it," the man's friend said.

The friend said the man purposefully stuck his finger in the snake's mouth.

"He put his finger in there and all of a sudden the nerves, I guess, and it bit down on his finger."

The man first refused medical treatment, but after he started showing symptoms of venom poisoning, he was taken to USA Medical Center, treated, and released. Link -via Arbroath
