Just a couple of years ago, the smart meter and all of its progeny -- smart grid, smart appliances, smart home -- were more of a concept than a tangible conclusion . In fact, a report released by Scottsdale, Ariz.-based NPD In-Stat forecasts that by 2016, more than 75 percent of all U.S. electric meters will be converted to smart meters.
