Our ingredient review for this week focuses on N-Acetyl L-Cysteine (NAC) found in our JNK Capsules and Calmag Supreme. NAC is a form of the amino acid L-cysteine (amino acids are the building blocks of protein).
N-Acetyl L-Cysteine has many uses as a dietary supplement, and has been found to be especially effective to help cope with bipolar depression. In a recent study at the Ninth International Conference on Bipolar Disorder, patients were given 2000 mg of NAC in addition to their “treatment as usual” and showed significantly lower symptom severity scores and increased functioning and quality-of-life scores.
It is understood that NAC works because it helps prevent oxidative damage in the human body (and brain). It does this by increasing levels of glutathione. Glutathione is a substance that the body makes that functions as an antioxidant, which means that it can neutralize reactive and harmful oxygen particles. This is important in helping the brain to function properly.
NAC’s antioxidant function is also important in maintaining a healthy liver. All psychoactive drugs affect the liver and ultimate health requires the liver to be functioning properly. As the liver is able to better remove toxins and function properly, you will experience gradual and positive changes both mentally and physically
