| | | Is it Up or is it Down?
For most of the year, the stock market's key indices have basically moved together. While the magnitude of the daily or weekly index changes have differed, the direction for the most part has not. So, for nearly three-and-one-half months the Dow Jones Industrial Average, Standard and Poor's 500 Index and the Russell 2000 Index rose together and fell together. It certainly has made it easier to cite market trends when these things occur.
However, in recent days we have had a divergence not just in the magnitude of changes with one index compared to another, but in direction as well. Why is this happening, and what does it portend?
It's easy to say that the NASDAQ, for example, is taking it on the chin because of the recent sharp declines in Apple (NASDAQ: APPL) and Google (NASDAQ: GOOG). In Apple's case, perhaps investors are locking in profits, and maybe others have reached their peak ownership plans so it's unlikely that new money would be committed to the stock.
Behind the Scenes
I blew it and I am really sorry. Look, if I'm going to get up and crow when I make good stock picks, I better be able to man up and admit mistakes. It's only fair, right? Hopefully that attitude garners your respect and attention and you will continue to return to "the Junction" and read our daily blogs.
Anyway, what I am apologizing for today is not for a stock pick that went awry. Instead, it is the fact that I became uncharacteristically cautious and switched the order of some of the stocks we have featured on these pages. It's not as if what we introduced was such a travesty. I hate being wrong. Frankly, I feel like a schmuck because we could have been heroes for you.
To make up for it, I am going to give you an insider's view of what happened not just with these situations but with how we are approaching our future recommendations. This type of intel could prove to be invaluable down the road.
