| This Week's Goal: Eat Breakfast Every Day | | | Hi ,
Is skipping breakfast part of your daily routine? If you miss breakfast, you’ll end up going around 15 hours without refueling. Without properly energizing yourself, you can start feeling sluggish, irritable and your brain won’t function as well. Studies show that kids do better in school when they eat breakfast, and the same goes for adults.
Mom was right when she said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Let’s start this healthy challenge out the same way you should start your day: with breakfast.
All you have to do is eat breakfast each day this week. It doesn’t have to be a large meal, just grab a little something to boost your metabolism for the day ahead – a slice of whole grain bread with natural peanut butter or some Greek yogurt and a piece of fruit. Fortunately, the most important meal of the day takes the least amount of time to prepare. Some of the best breakfasts for you, like oatmeal, smoothies or a breakfast burrito can be made in 10 minutes or less. If you’re a multi-tasker, bring a mini bagel with egg and cheese or a banana “soft taco” (that’s banana and peanut butter in a whole-wheat tortilla) with you on your morning commute. Cereal is a favorite for kids and adults alike, but read our guidelines for choosing a healthy cereal before heading to the grocery store; many popular cereals are loaded with sugar. Oatmeal is another family favorite, but mix it up a little – have you tried topping it with pumpkin, coconut or granola, or adding it to a smoothie or pancakes?
If you do have more time, make extra waffles or pancakes to freeze; on a busy morning, reheat in the microwave or toaster oven. And for a real treat, consider cookies. Yes, cookies for breakfast – and not Oreos – Ellie Krieger’s breakfast cookies are made with whole grains, fruit and even some vegetables, and they freeze well, too. Need more inspiration?
