D Bar Desserts
Hand-crafted desserts and delicious booze
3930 Fifth Ave; Hillcrest; 619.299.3227
If you like Denver, desserts, and drinks, you're both alliterative & weirdly compatible with the couple behind D Bar -- a sweets/booze shop that the Food Network-regular pastry chef and his wife originally opened in the land of skis and expensive technical fleecewear before deciding SD's population was much more handsome, and into sweets/booze. Posted up in Hillcrest next to (weirdly) also-Denver-born Snooze, DB features a warehouse-y feel brightened by huge skylights and dangling blown glass lamps that kind of resemble the alien reproductive organs from Avatar, but in, like, a sexy, classy way.
The Big D: Sweet stuff runs from the complex Cinco de Citrus (vanilla bean panna cotta, blood orange gelee, basil gel, lemon ice & citrus cloud), to classics like vanilla/ chocolate shakes or malts served alongside manjari-frosted, three-layer chocolate cake dubbed the "Cake and Shake", so it's even simple enough for those who wake and bake to understand.
The Big Bar: Situated opposite the D, the bar-bar boasts a modest vino list, dessert wines by the ounce, and "concoctions" like the You Say Mule, I Say Donkey (lime/ ginger beer/ falernum/ rhubarb-flavored liqueur), and a tiramisu martini made using "Ron's secret recipe" called the Pick Me Up, also the subject line of Terrell Owens' emails to every single NFL team.
And in case you're all, "I hate desserts, and cocktails named after members of the horse family", they will be serving mostly shareable non-desserts like a cheesy Belgian waffle topped with fried chicken and honey mustard, and drunken onion/ white cheddar/ garlic aioli sliders made with Kobe, a name that can't help but be associated with words like sexy, classy, and reproductive organs.
What do Jeeps, aliens, and barmaids outfits have in common? They're all on these insane cakes you need to check out at DBarSanDiego.com.
