1. Verizon, Midcontinent ranked fastest ISPs by PC Magazine

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Verizon's (NYSE: VZ) FiOS Internet and South Dakota-based cable operator Midcontinent Communications are the fastest ISPs nationwide, according to a PC Magazine report.

FiOS Internet delivered average download speeds of 29.4 Mbps, according to the report, which was based on data collected from Speedtest.net. Midcontinent placed second, with an average download speed of 24.7 Mbps. It was followed by Charter Communications (Nasdaq: CHTR)  (22.2 Mbps); Bright House Networks (21.5 Mbps); Cablevision's (NYSE: CVC) Optimum Online (21 Mbps); Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA)  (20.4 Mbps); RCN (19.6 Mbps); Wave Broadband (17.8 Mbps) and Cox Communications (17.2 Mbps).

The PC Magazine test differed from the Measuring Broadband America Report that the FCC released in July. That test found that FiOS Internet delivered speeds of 19.39 Mbps with its 15 Mbps package during peak periods, and that Cablevision delivered average download speeds of 19.14 Mbps during peak periods.

Verizon is the fastest ISP in the northeast, according to the PC Magazine report, delivering download speeds of 29.6 Mbps. It was followed by Cablevision (22.6 Mbps); Comcast (21.5 Mbps); Charter (20.9 Mbps) and RCN (19.8 Mbps).

Midcontinent is the fastest ISP in the North Central region, with download speeds of 24.7 Mbps, according to Speedtest.net data. It was followed by Bright House Networks (22.3 Mbps); Charter (21.7 Mbps); Comcast (20.5 Mbps); and Cox (18.9 Mbps).

Comcast is the fastest ISP in the Northwest, averaging download speeds of 19.8 Mbps, according to PC Magazine. It was followed by Charter (16.9 Mbps); Optimum Online (9.7 Mbps); Frontier Communications (Nasdaq: FTR)  (9.2 Mbps) and CenturyLink (7.4 Mbps).

FiOS is the fastest ISP in the South Central, where it averaged 32 Mbps. It topped Charter Communications (25 Mbps), Comcast (19.8 Mbps) and Cox (15.7) in the region. FiOS was also the fastest ISP in the Southeast, averaging 23.9 Mbps, and the Southwest, where it averaged 39.8 Mbps.

2. HughesNet flips switch on 15 Mbps satellite broadband service

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Hughes Network Systems said Monday that it activated its Gen4 satellite broadband Internet service, charging subscribers $99 monthly for download speeds of up to 15 Mbps.

HughesNet is targeting rural subscribers that don't have access to cable modem or DSL service with the product. It can deliver upload speeds of 2 Mbps.

The Gen4 service offers data allowances of just 20 GB monthly for the service. It also offers 20 GB of "bonus bytes" of data that can be downloaded from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m.

HughesNet is using EchoStar's (Nasdaq: SATS) EchoStar XVII satellite to deliver the Gen4 service. The satellite was launched into orbit in July.

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Advertising spending on national cable networks is expected to increase 8 percent to nearly $20 billion this year, according to ZenithOptimedia.

The firm said it expects ad spending worldwide to increase by 3.8 percent in 2012 to $502 billion, down from a forecast it released in June that said spending would increase by 4.3 percent. But it raised its forecasts for U.S. ad spending, saying it expects domestic advertising spending to increase by 4.3 percent to $161 billion.

Marketers continue to shift spending to the Internet, according to ZenithOptimedia. It said it expects Internet ads to comprise a 21 percent share of the market in 2014, up from 16 percent in 2011.
