1. Motorola dumps Android Ice Cream Sandwich for three 4G smartphones

By Jason Ankeny Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Motorola Mobility unit has canceled plans to upgrade its Atrix 4G, Electrify and Photon 4G smartphones to Android 4.0, dubbed Ice Cream Sandwich. All three devices will continue to run Android 2.3, a.k.a. Gingerbread, which Google first released in late 2010.

A Motorola device roadmap released in February promised Android 4.0 updates for the Atrix 4G, Electrify and Photon 4G during the third quarter, but a Motorola Forums statement from the company's Vice President of Product Punit Soni confirms those plans have been scrapped. "Motorola Mobility continues to review how each device can deliver the very best experience possible, and at times, this can mean making tough choices--especially as it relates to Android software upgrades," Soni writes. "Specifically, Atrix 4G, Photon 4G and Electrify will not receive the ICS upgrade but continue to be supported with maintenance releases to ensure optimum performance for the consumer."

Consumer reaction to Soni's statement was overwhelmingly negative. "Unacceptable! This could have been told to us a lot sooner," reads one Motorola Owners' Forum comment, while another user adds: "I will never again give my money to Motorola and will be doing my best to ensure anyone I know never buys a Motorola product."

Last month, Motorola Mobility pledged to give a $100 credit to consumers who purchased an Android device that is not in line to upgrade to Android 4.1, a.k.a. Jelly Bean. To qualify for the offer, consumers must have purchased a Motorola-manufactured Android device released since the beginning of 2011, and that device must be on the short list of phones that will not run Jelly Bean for technical reasons. In addition, the $100 credit must be applied to one of three new Droid-branded devices from Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ): The Droid Razr M, the Droid Razr HD or the Droid Razr Maxx HD.  Motorola Mobility will specify which devices are eligible for the offer at a later date--Soni adds that the program will kick off in the U.S. sometime this fall, and will later expand to selected international markets.

"We know that keeping current on the latest Android operating system is important to all of our users," Motorola Mobility CEO Dennis Woodside said in September. "We will upgrade most of our devices that were launched since 2011 to Jelly Bean very soon, but there are a small number of devices that can't be upgraded without degrading the phone performance."

Google's Android Developers dashboard reveals that only 1.2 percent of devices run Android Jelly Bean. Android Ice Cream Sandwich now powers 20.9 percent of devices, and 57.5 percent of devices still run Android Gingerbread.

2. Nokia, Oracle ink mapping agreement for business apps

By Jason Ankeny Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Nokia (NYSE:NOK) announced an agreement to integrate its location services platform into Oracle's business applications.

Per terms of the new partnership, Oracle users can now license Nokia Location Platform services directly from the handset maker. According to Nokia, Oracle has developed a built-in link between its Oracle Fusion Middleware MapViewer--a J2EE service for rendering maps and creating mashups leveraging spatial data--and the location platform, eliminating the barrier of customized map integration and enabling enterprise customers to more easily build Nokia geo-location data into their apps. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Oracle supplies business software and hardware to close to 400,000 customers worldwide, including all Fortune 100 companies. Oracle states that more than 114,000 clients have adopted the Fusion Middleware platform, while 80,000 rely on its applications portfolio, which includes on-premises, public cloud, private cloud and hybrid deployments.

"Nokia has been on a mission for the last 18 months to sign mapping and location deals with large Internet players," CCS Insight Analyst Martin Garner told Reuters. "The deal with Oracle extends this and broadens the large enterprise market for Nokia's location services."

Nokia launched its Location & Commerce unit in mid-2011, integrating its Navteq navigation solutions unit (acquired for $8.1 billion in 2007) with its mobile social networking efforts. The division currently generates about 4 percent of the company's overall revenues. Last week, Nokia announced new partnerships with BMW, Mercedes, Volkswagen and Hyundai to extend Navteq data to the automakers' in-vehicle navigation systems--Nokia also trumpeted new agreements with consumer electronics manufacturer Pioneer and satellite navigation firm Garmin.

3. HP's Open webOS 1.0 released, ported to Samsung Galaxy Nexus

By Jason Ankeny Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Hewlett-Packard released Open webOS 1.0, enabling developers to port the mobile operating system to new devices.

Coming less than a month after the launch of the Open webOS beta, version 1.0 contains an OpenEmbedded build enabling a full webOS experience running inside an OE emulator and adds email and browser support. Open webOS 1.0 also touts support for Enyo2, allowing developers to run apps built on cross-platform JavaScript frameworks.

HP said it has delivered more than 75 webOS components over the last nine months, corresponding to 450,000 lines of code available via Open webOS repositories on GitHub. Future enhancements are slated to include support for Qt5/WebKit2, open-sourced media and audio components, BlueZ Bluetooth stack, ConnMan network management and an optimized SysMgr rendering architecture.

HP acquired webOS in 2010 when it purchased Palm for $1.2 billion, discontinuing its webOS device business in mid-2011. Earlier this year, the company pledged to make the platform fully open-source by the end of September. In August, HP spun off its webOS Global Business Unit into a new independent company called Gram.

Hours following Open webOS 1.0's release, the independent webOS Ports team announced it has ported the platform to Samsung's Galaxy Nexus smartphone. The Verge reports the OS runs and can connect to Wi-Fi, but it does not yet support other core functions such as SMS. The webOS Ports team adds it will not publish a full porting how-to for users until its efforts yield a phone suitable for everyday use.

4. Facebook upgrades Messenger for Apple's iOS with new chat UI

By Jason Ankeny Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) released a revamped version of its Messenger for iOS standalone messaging app, introducing a retooled chat user interface as well as support for Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) new iPhone 5 and updated iOS 6 operating system.

Facebook Messenger for iOS 2.0's new conversation view presents chat activity in bubbles similar to those integrated into Apple's own iMessage. The app also enables users to swipe their finger to determine which of their contacts are currently available, a feature first unveiled in Messenger for Android 2.0, which Facebook introduced late last month. The Facebook for iOS refresh also brings improved speed and reliability as well as multiple bug fixes.

Facebook Messenger for iOS 2.0 follows less than a month after Facebook rolled out an updated version of its iOS social networking app, opting for a fully native experience instead of embedded HTML5. Last week, the social network also released version 3.1 of its iOS software development kit, adding support for the Facebook platform's deep integration into iOS 6.

Facebook now boasts 955 million monthly active users worldwide, and 59 percent of that audience accesses the platform via mobile device. In addition, the number of Facebook users who accessed the site exclusively via mobile increased to 102 million in the second quarter, a 23 percent quarter-over-quarter leap.

5. Pew Research: One-third of U.S. adults access news via mobile every week

By Jason Ankeny Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

One-third of U.S. adults access news content via mobile device at least once every week, according to a new survey conducted by the Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism.

Pew

View a larger version of this chart on the Web.

Fifteen percent of all Americans now access news on their phone, tablet or other mobile device, up from 9 percent two years ago, Pew Research reports--in addition, 28 percent of all mobile Internet users get their news on mobile devices, increasing 1 percentage point over 2010. Americans under the age of 50 are far more likely to regularly read news on a mobile device, which Pew Research credits to the huge disparity in mobile Web access between younger and older consumers: Seventy-five percent of users younger than 50 access the Internet on their mobile device, compared to 30 percent of users 50 and older.

Tablet owners lead all Americans on news consumption: Sixty-six percent of respondents access news on their device, compared to 62 percent of smartphone owners, Pew Research reports. A quarter of all Americans and 45 percent of mobile Internet users have downloaded a news app to their mobile device--in 2010, 16 percent of the public and 20 percent of mobile Web users said they had ever downloaded a news app. Pew Research adds that news app users tend to be young, well-educated and wealthy: Forty-three percent of consumers from homes with incomes in excess of $100,000 a year have downloaded a news app, compared to 19 percent from households bringing in $30,000 a year or less.

Pew Research adds that 70 percent of consumers who have downloaded news apps accessed headlines via mobile or the desktop within the last 24 hours--however, 54 percent still viewed television news during the same timeframe and 39 percent listened to radio news, numbers comparable to the general public. Among all adults, 55 percent watched TV news and 33 percent listened to radio news within the last 24 hours.
